# Avoiding Groomer Burnout and Injury: Building a Career That Lasts

A groomer's honest guide to protecting your body and mind: preventing RSI and strain, better ergonomics, pacing your day and building a sustainable career.

Let me tell you something no one mentions on your first day at grooming college. This job is physically brutal on your body and quietly demanding on your mind, and if you do not look after both, it will shorten your career. I have known wonderful, gifted groomers walk away in their thirties and forties, not because they lost their love for it, but because their wrists gave out or they simply burned to a crisp. That does not have to be you. Building a career that lasts is a skill in itself, and it is one worth learning early. So let me talk honestly about protecting yourself, from someone who intends to still be grooming years from now.

We spend so long learning to protect the dog on the table that we forget the person standing at it. That person is your livelihood. Look after them.

## The physical toll is real, so take it seriously

Grooming is repetitive, static, awkward work. Hours of scissoring with the same wrist and hand movement, leaning over a table, holding tension, gripping tools, restraining wriggling dogs. All of that adds up, and the damage is cumulative rather than sudden, which is exactly why it sneaks up on people. The main risks are repetitive strain and upper limb disorders in the hands, wrists, forearms, shoulders and neck, and back trouble from bending and lifting.

The good news is that these are largely preventable if you respect them. The groomers who last are not the ones with iron bodies, they are the ones who work smarter and protect themselves deliberately, day in day out.

## Sort your ergonomics

Ergonomics sounds like an office word, but it just means setting up your work so your body is not fighting it. A few changes here make an enormous difference over a career.

Get your table height right, so you are not hunching down or reaching up, because working at the wrong height for hours is what wrecks backs and shoulders. Use a good adjustable table and a bath or ramp so you are not lifting heavy dogs up and down, since lifting is one of the biggest injury risks in the job. Invest in quality scissors that suit your hand, ideally with an offset or ergonomic handle, because cheap, ill-fitting scissors force your hand into strain with every cut. Keep your tools sharp, because a blunt blade makes your hand work far harder. And mind your posture, keeping your shoulders down and relaxed rather than creeping up around your ears as you concentrate.

None of this is expensive compared to the cost of an injury that stops you working.

> **Safety note:** Never lift a heavy dog on and off a table with your back. Use a ramp or a lift bath, or ask for help, and if you must lift, bend your knees and keep the dog close to your body. A single bad lift can put your back out for weeks and cost you far more in lost work than the ramp ever would. Protect your back like your income depends on it, because it does.

## Take microbreaks and vary your movement

You cannot scissor solidly for eight hours without paying for it. The fix is not one long lunch, it is little and often. Build small breaks into your day, stretch your hands, wrists, forearms and shoulders regularly, and roll your neck and back between dogs. Shake out your hands, open and close your grip, and give the tension a moment to release before it sets in.

Vary what you do too. If you can, avoid stacking three heavy scissor jobs back to back, and mix in a bath or a clipper dog to give your scissoring hand a rest. Spreading the different movements across your day is far kinder to your body than hammering one motion for hours. Your future self will thank you.

## Pace your book and your day

Overbooking is a slow road to burnout, both physical and mental. It is tempting, especially early on or when money is tight, to cram in one more dog, skip your lunch and work through. Do that consistently and you will grind yourself down. Build realistic time into each groom, leave gaps for the dogs that run long or arrive matted, and actually take your break. A rushed groomer makes mistakes, and a permanently rushed groomer eventually breaks.

Learn to say no, as well. You do not have to accept every booking or squeeze in every favour. A full but sane book beats an impossible one that leaves you resentful and exhausted.

## Look after your head, not just your hands

Burnout is not only physical. Grooming can be emotionally heavy: difficult dogs, upset owners, the pressure of running a business alone, the isolation of a one-person salon, the endless standing and concentrating. It is easy to feel frazzled and not notice it building until you are dreading the day ahead.

Protect your mental wellbeing as deliberately as your wrists. Notice the early signs of stress, dread, exhaustion, short temper, losing your usual enjoyment of the work. Talk to other groomers, because the community understands this job in a way outsiders cannot, and knowing you are not alone with the hard bits helps enormously. Keep boundaries between work and home, take proper time off, and do not let the business swallow every hour. If stress is genuinely getting on top of you, there is no shame in reaching for support, and there are good, free resources aimed exactly at self-employed people and small businesses.

## Play the long game

The groomers still happily working decades in are the ones who treated their body and mind as their most valuable tools, more valuable than any pair of scissors. Set your workspace up well, move and stretch through the day, pace your book, protect your headspace, and take the aches seriously when they first whisper rather than waiting for them to shout. Grooming can absolutely be a long, joyful career. It just asks that you look after the person doing it.

## Frequently asked questions

**What are the most common injuries groomers get?** Repetitive strain and upper limb disorders in the hands, wrists, forearms, shoulders and neck are top of the list, along with back problems from bending and lifting. They build gradually, which is why early good habits with ergonomics, breaks and lifting matter so much before any damage is done.

**How can I protect my hands and wrists while scissoring?** Use well-fitting, sharp, ergonomic scissors, keep your grip relaxed rather than clenched, take regular microbreaks, and stretch your hands and forearms through the day. Vary your work so you are not scissoring non-stop, and address any ache or tingling early rather than pushing through it.

**How do I stop myself burning out?** Pace your book realistically, take your breaks, keep boundaries between work and home, and stay connected to other groomers. Watch for early warning signs like dread and exhaustion, and act on them. Protecting your mental health is part of running a sustainable business, not a luxury.

**Is it worth spending on a good table and bath?** Absolutely. An adjustable table at the right height and a bath or ramp that saves you lifting heavy dogs are among the best investments you can make, because they directly protect your back and shoulders. The cost is small next to an injury that stops you earning.

For workplace guidance on preventing strain injuries, the HSE pages on [musculoskeletal disorders](https://www.hse.gov.uk/msd/index.htm) and [upper limb disorders](https://www.hse.gov.uk/msd/uld/index.htm) are worth reading, and if the mental side is weighing on you, [Mind's advice on work and stress](https://www.mind.org.uk/information-support/tips-for-everyday-living/how-to-be-mentally-healthy-at-work/work-and-stress/) is a good, free place to start.
