# Bloat and GDV in Dogs: The Emergency Every Owner Should Recognise

Bloat and GDV in dogs is a fast-moving emergency. A York groomer explains the warning signs, the breeds most at risk, and how to lower the risk.

Of all the things that can go wrong with a dog, bloat is the one I most want owners to be able to spot early, because minutes genuinely matter. In short: bloat, and the far more dangerous twisted-stomach version called GDV (gastric dilatation volvulus), is a life-threatening emergency where the stomach fills with gas and can rotate. If your dog has a swollen, hard belly, keeps trying to be sick with nothing coming up, and seems restless and distressed, you need your vet on the phone straight away, not in the morning.

I am a groomer, not a vet, so I am not here to diagnose anything. But because so many of the dogs I see are the deep-chested breeds most at risk, I want every owner walking through my door to know what this looks like and to act fast if they ever see it.

## What bloat and GDV actually are

The stomach fills with gas, food or fluid and stretches (that is the "bloat" part). In a [GDV](https://www.pdsa.org.uk/pet-help-and-advice/pet-health-hub/conditions/gdv-gastric-dilatation-volvulus-in-dogs), the swollen stomach then twists, trapping everything inside and cutting off the blood supply. This can go from a dog seeming a bit uncomfortable to a genuine emergency in a very short space of time, which is exactly why it frightens vets and owners alike.

The important takeaway is not the science, it is the speed. A dog with a twisted stomach usually needs urgent treatment and often surgery, and even then it is serious. Early recognition and a fast trip to the vet give your dog the best possible chance.

## The warning signs to act on

Call your vet immediately if you notice:

- A **swollen, bloated or hard belly**, sometimes drum-tight
- **Unproductive retching:** trying to vomit again and again but bringing little or nothing up
- **Restlessness and pacing**, unable to settle or get comfortable
- **Drooling** more than usual
- Looking anxious, hunched or glancing at their tummy
- Weakness, pale gums, fast breathing or collapse

> **Vet note:** You do not need to be certain it is bloat to ring your vet. If your dog has a big, tight tummy and is trying to be sick without success, treat it as an emergency and call now. It is always better to be checked and reassured than to wait.

## Which dogs are most at risk

Bloat and GDV are most common in large, [deep-chested breeds](https://www.bluecross.org.uk/advice/dog) such as Great Danes, Weimaraners, German Shepherds, Setters, Boxers, Standard Poodles and similar big-bodied dogs. Older dogs and those with a close relative that has had it can be more prone too.

That said, it is not exclusively a big-dog problem, so the signs above are worth knowing whatever you own. Smaller dogs can bloat as well, just less often.

## Sensible ways to lower the risk

There is no cast-iron prevention, but plenty of owners of at-risk breeds take some gentle precautions:

- **Split meals** into two or more smaller feeds rather than one large one
- **Avoid hard exercise** right before and for a while after eating; let food settle first
- Slow down fast eaters with a **slow-feeder bowl** or a puzzle feeder
- Keep mealtimes calm rather than frantic and gulpy
- Chat to your vet about whether a **preventative tummy-tacking procedure** (gastropexy) is worth considering for very high-risk breeds

None of this replaces knowing the signs. Think of it as tilting the odds while staying ready to act.

## Frequently asked questions

**How quickly does bloat become dangerous in dogs?** Very quickly. A twisted stomach (GDV) can become life-threatening within hours, sometimes less. That is why any dog with a swollen belly and repeated unproductive retching needs a vet straight away, day or night.

**What does a bloated dog belly look like?** The tummy often looks visibly swollen or distended and can feel tight or hard to the touch, sometimes towards the ribs and left side. Paired with restlessness and failed attempts to vomit, treat it as an emergency.

**Can feeding habits really affect bloat risk?** They may help. Smaller, more frequent meals, avoiding vigorous exercise around mealtimes, and slowing down gulpers are commonly advised for at-risk breeds. Ask your vet about what suits your individual dog.

**Is bloat only a big-dog problem?** It is most common in large, deep-chested breeds, but smaller dogs can be affected too, just far less often. The warning signs are worth knowing whatever the size of your dog.

## This isn't veterinary advice

We're professional dog groomers, not vets, so please treat this as friendly general guidance. If you're worried about your dog, or before acting on anything here, speak to your local vet. In an emergency, contact your vet or nearest out-of-hours clinic.
