I see plenty of scratchy, nibbly pups on my grooming table here in York, so I understand exactly why owners ask whether they can pop a Piriton in and give their dog some relief. The honest answer is a careful "sometimes, but only with your vet's say-so." Vets *do* sometimes recommend Piriton (the active ingredient is [chlorphenamine](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chlorphenamine)) for dogs with allergies or itching, but only on their advice and at a dose they calculate for your particular dog. Please don't guess it yourself. And crucially, never grab a random antihistamine off the shelf, because many human hayfever and allergy products contain extra ingredients that are dangerous for dogs. I'm a groomer, not a vet, so treat this as a friendly steer towards the safe path, which starts with a phone call. ## Can dogs have Piriton? Under veterinary guidance, sometimes yes. Chlorphenamine is one antihistamine that vets may suggest for certain allergic or itchy dogs, and they'll tell you the right amount for your dog's weight and health. What they won't want you to do is decide the dose yourself, because it varies a great deal from dog to dog and there's no safe "one size fits all" figure to share. So the rule is simple: if your vet has specifically recommended Piriton for *your* dog and told you how much, follow their instructions to the letter. If they haven't, ring and ask before you give anything. > **Vet note:** Only ever give an antihistamine on your own vet's advice and at the dose they specify, and only the exact product they name. Never work out a dose yourself, and never assume a human allergy tablet is safe just because it's "only an antihistamine". ## Why you can't just grab any packet This is the part that catches people out. "Antihistamine" isn't one single thing: the allergy aisle is full of combination products, and some contain ingredients that are genuinely toxic to dogs: - **Decongestants** such as pseudoephedrine (common in "sinus", "cold and flu" and "day/night" versions) can be very dangerous. - [**Xylitol**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xylitol), an artificial sweetener sometimes used in liquids, chewables and melts, is highly toxic to dogs. - Other **added painkillers or caffeine** in combination formulas bring their own risks. Even two boxes that look almost identical on the shelf can contain completely different ingredients. That's exactly why your vet will name a specific product, and why guessing is such a gamble. The same rule holds for other human medicines like [paracetamol](https://www.fluffsyork.co.uk/dog-grooming-tips-and-tricks/can-you-give-dogs-paracetamol) and [ibuprofen](https://www.fluffsyork.co.uk/dog-grooming-tips-and-tricks/can-you-give-dogs-ibuprofen). ## What to do for an itchy dog If your dog is scratching, nibbling, licking their paws or rubbing their face, it's worth getting to the [*cause*](https://www.pdsa.org.uk/pet-help-and-advice/pet-health-hub) rather than just reaching for a tablet. Itching can come from [fleas](https://www.fluffsyork.co.uk/dog-grooming-tips-and-tricks/fleas-on-dogs), environmental or food allergies, skin infections that flare into [hot spots](https://www.fluffsyork.co.uk/dog-grooming-tips-and-tricks/hot-spots-on-dogs), or a coat that's matted and trapping moisture and irritation against the skin. Sensible first steps: - **Book a vet check** if the itching is persistent, spreading, or making your dog sore. - **Keep on top of flea and worm treatment.** It's one of the most common hidden causes. - **Groom regularly and keep the coat clean and mat-free.** Matting traps dirt and damp against the skin and makes irritation worse, so good grooming genuinely helps skin comfort. A professional groom can also flag sore or flaky patches early. - **Note any patterns.** Is it seasonal, after walks, after certain foods? That's gold dust for your vet. ## When an allergic reaction is an emergency Some reactions need help *fast*, for example after a bee or wasp sting, an insect bite, or a new food or vaccine. Call your out-of-hours emergency vet immediately if you notice: - **Swelling of the face, muzzle, eyes or throat** - **Difficulty breathing, noisy breathing or persistent coughing** - **Collapse, sudden weakness or pale gums** - **Widespread hives with vomiting or extreme distress** These can be signs of **anaphylaxis**, a severe allergic reaction that can be life-threatening. Don't wait, and don't try to treat it at home with a tablet. Get straight on the phone to a vet.
