# Collar vs Harness for Dogs: The Honest Truth About Which to Walk On

Collar or harness for your dog? A York groomer explains the pros and cons of each, when to use them, and how to protect your dog's neck on the lead.

Almost every week a client asks me whether they should be walking their dog on a collar or a harness, usually while I am towelling off a wriggly spaniel who has strong opinions of his own. The honest answer is that both have their place, and the right choice depends on your dog's build, how they behave on the lead, and what you are actually doing on the walk. Let me talk you through the real pros and cons so you can decide with confidence.

## What a collar is good for

A flat collar is the everyday default, and there is a lot to like about it. It is simple, quick to pop on, and it is the thing that carries your dog's ID tag, which by law it must wear in public (more on that below). For a dog that already walks nicely on a loose lead and does not pull, a collar is perfectly fine and pleasantly fuss-free.

The catch is the neck. When a dog lunges or pulls hard against a collar, all that force lands on a narrow band around the throat, right over the windpipe, thyroid and other delicate structures. A one-off tug is unlikely to do harm, but repeated hard pulling over months and years is a genuine concern, especially for small breeds and dogs with fragile airways.

- **Best for:** dogs that walk calmly, ID tag duty, quick garden trips.
- **Watch out for:** pullers, flat-faced breeds, and toy breeds prone to a collapsing windpipe.

## What a harness is good for

A [well-fitted harness](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog_harness) spreads the pressure of the lead across the chest and shoulders instead of the throat. For any dog that pulls, for puppies still learning, and for breeds with breathing or neck vulnerabilities, this is a real welfare win. It also gives you more secure control of a strong or excitable dog, and there is no sudden choke if they spot a squirrel.

Harnesses are not flawless, mind. A badly fitted one can rub the armpits, restrict the shoulder movement, or actually encourage pulling if the clip sits in the wrong place. Some dogs also find the whole business of stepping into it a bit much at first.

- **Best for:** pullers, puppies, small and flat-faced breeds, nervous dogs, anyone doing long or adventurous walks.
- **Watch out for:** poor fit, rubbing, and back-clip designs that can make keen pullers pull harder.

## Neck pressure: the bit that really matters

This is the heart of the whole debate. Dogs have surprisingly delicate necks, and constant pressure from a collar on a habitual puller is not something to shrug off. Small breeds such as Yorkies, Pomeranians and Chihuahuas are especially prone to a weakened windpipe, and flat-faced breeds like Pugs and French Bulldogs already work hard to breathe without a collar squeezing the throat on top.

> **Groomer's tip:** If your dog coughs, gags, or makes a honking noise when they pull on the collar, that is your cue to switch to a harness. It is not being soft, it is protecting an airway you cannot see.

## How to choose between them

For most dogs I lean towards a harness for walks and a collar worn at the same time for the ID tag. You genuinely can use both together, and many owners do. If your dog is a serene, no-pull walker, a good [flat collar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog_collar) alone is fine. If they pull, are tiny, are flat-faced, or are still learning lead manners, reach for a harness.

Whatever you choose, fit is everything. You should be able to slide two fingers under a collar comfortably, and a harness should be snug without digging in, with no rubbing at the armpits. Check the fit as puppies grow and as coats change through the seasons.

## Grooming and fit go hand in hand

A matted coat under a harness or collar is a hidden misery. The straps trap moisture and friction, and mats form quickly in the armpits and around the neck. If your dog wears a harness a lot, keep those contact areas brushed and tangle-free, and mention it at their groom so we can pay those spots extra attention. Keeping the coat in good order means the kit sits kindly on the skin.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is a harness better than a collar for dogs?** For walking, a harness is usually kinder because it takes pressure off the neck, particularly for pullers, puppies, small breeds and flat-faced dogs. A collar is fine for calm walkers and is still needed to carry the ID tag.

**Does my dog legally have to wear a collar?** Yes. In the UK your dog must wear a collar with a tag showing your name and address when in a public place, even if you walk them on a harness. The two are not either/or.

**Can a collar damage my dog's throat?** Repeated hard pulling on a collar can strain the windpipe and neck, especially in small or flat-faced breeds. If your dog coughs or gags when pulling, move to a harness.

**Which harness is best for a dog that pulls?** A well-fitted front-clip or Y-shaped harness gives the most control and discourages pulling. Avoid anything that rubs the armpits or restricts the shoulders, and get the fit checked as your dog grows.
