# DIY Dog Enrichment on a Budget: Cardboard, Muffin Tins and Towel Rolls

DIY dog enrichment on a budget: cardboard box searches, the muffin tin game, towel roll puzzles and scatter feeding. Free, easy ways to keep your dog busy.

You do not need a cupboard full of expensive puzzle toys to keep your dog happily occupied. Some of the best enrichment I know comes from the recycling bin, the kitchen and the airing cupboard, and it costs nothing. If your dog is bored, restless or forever finding their own mischief, a few homemade games can turn a spare five minutes into proper mental exercise.

Here are the DIY enrichment ideas I recommend most, all cheap, all easy, all a hit with the dogs I meet.

## Why homemade enrichment works so well

Enrichment isn't really about the toy, it's about giving your dog a job that makes them think, sniff and problem-solve. A cardboard box does that as well as a pricey gadget. Mental work like this tires a dog, satisfies natural instincts and heads off the boredom that leads to chewing and other mischief. [Dogs Trust links a lot of destructive behaviour straight back to under-stimulation](https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/dog-advice/training/unwanted-behaviours/destructive), so a few minutes of homemade fun earns its keep.

## Cardboard box games

The humble box is a goldmine.

- **The box search:** scrunch some treats into a box with balls of newspaper and let your dog rummage them out.
- **Nested boxes:** hide a treat in a small box inside a bigger box for a two-step puzzle.
- **The demolition job:** for dogs who love to shred, a loosely closed box with treats inside gives them a satisfying, legal thing to destroy.

Just supervise, remove any tape or staples first, and take away cardboard your dog starts to actually eat.

## The muffin tin puzzle

This one always gets a laugh, and dogs love it.

- Drop a treat into some of the cups of a muffin tin.
- Cover every cup with a tennis ball.
- Your dog has to nudge the balls aside to find which cups hide a reward.

It's a genuine problem for a dog to solve, and you can make it harder by baiting fewer cups so they have to keep searching.

> **Groomer's tip:** Feed part of your dog's daily meal through these games rather than adding extra treats. It keeps the calories in check and turns an ordinary dinner into ten minutes of enrichment.

## Towel and fabric puzzles

An old towel becomes a fine sniff-and-search puzzle.

- **The towel roll:** sprinkle treats along a towel, then roll it up loosely for your dog to unroll and hunt through.
- **The knotted towel:** tie a loose knot or two with treats tucked inside the folds.
- **The muffin-tray tea towel:** lay a tea towel over a baited muffin tin for an extra layer to work past.

These are perfect for rainy days and for older dogs who need gentle mental work without much movement.

## Scatter feeding and simple sniffing

The easiest of the lot needs nothing but your dog's own food. Scatter a handful across the lawn or a doormat and let them snuffle it out. Sniffing is deeply satisfying and calming for dogs, so this simple game does far more than it looks. A [comfortable, stimulating home is exactly what the RSPCA recommends](https://www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/pets/dogs/environment), and free games like these tick that box beautifully.

## A quick word on safety

Homemade doesn't mean hands-off. Always supervise, especially with dogs who like to eat things they shouldn't. Remove tape, staples, plastic and any small parts, take away shredded pieces before they're swallowed, and never use anything toxic or sharp. If your dog is a determined swallower of non-food items, stick to scatter feeding and skip the shreddable games.

## Frequently asked questions

**What household items make good dog enrichment?** Cardboard boxes, muffin tins with tennis balls, old towels and empty plastic bottles (label and cap removed) all make excellent puzzles. Add your dog's own food or treats and supervise while they play.

**Is cardboard safe for dogs to play with?** A little cardboard shredding is usually fine, but it's not meant to be eaten. Remove tape and staples, supervise, and take the box away if your dog starts swallowing pieces rather than just tearing them.

**How long should a DIY enrichment session last?** Even five to ten minutes of focused problem-solving is worthwhile and tiring. Little and often across the day works better than one long session.

**Can I use these games to feed my dog?** Yes, feeding part of the daily ration through puzzles is a great idea. It slows fast eaters, adds mental work and keeps treat calories down since you're using their normal food.
