# Dog Car Safety and Travel Restraints: The Honest Truth

An unrestrained dog in a car is a risk to everyone in it. In a sudden stop at 30mph, a loose dog is thrown forward with enormous force, which can injure them, injure you, and turn a small bump into something far worse. It is also against the guidance every UK driver signs up to. The good news is that restraining your dog properly is straightforward once you know the three main options and how to choose between them. Here is the honest version, no scaremongering.
## What the law actually says: Highway Code Rule 57
This is the bit owners often get vague about, so let us be precise. Rule 57 of the [Highway Code](https://www.gov.uk/guidance/the-highway-code/rules-about-animals-47-to-58) states:
> "When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly. A seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are ways of restraining animals in cars."
Two things worth knowing. First, "must" and "must not" rules in the Highway Code are legal requirements, but Rule 57 uses "should", so it is advisory. However, an unrestrained dog can still land you in trouble: if it causes you to drive without proper control or without due care, that is an offence, and it can invalidate your insurance after an accident. So while you will not be pulled over purely for a loose dog, the practical stakes are high.
## The three main ways to restrain a dog
**A crate or travel carrier.** A sturdy crate secured in the boot is arguably the safest option for many dogs. It contains them fully, gives a nervous traveller a den, and stops any wandering. It must be properly fixed so it cannot slide or tip.
**A dog guard.** A barrier fitted behind the rear seats keeps the dog in the boot area and away from the driver. It stops distraction well, though on its own it does not restrain the dog within the boot in a crash the way a crate or harness does.
**A crash-tested seatbelt harness.** A proper car harness clips to the seatbelt anchor and holds the dog on the back seat. This is the key point: a normal walking harness is not a car safety device. Only use a harness marketed and, ideally, crash-tested for travel, and make sure it is correctly sized and fitted.

## How to choose the right one for your dog
- **Big or bouncy dogs:** a secured crate or a dog guard plus harness gives the most control.
- **Small dogs:** a secured carrier or a properly fitted car harness on the back seat.
- **Nervous travellers:** a crate often feels safest and most den-like.
- **Two or more dogs:** separate crates or a guard usually beats loose dogs sharing a seat.
Introduce any of these gradually, with treats and short trips, so the car becomes a good place rather than a stressful one.
## Never the hot car
No safety kit changes the golden rule: never leave a dog alone in a parked car, not even for a few minutes, not even with the windows cracked. On a warm day the inside of a car heats to lethal temperatures astonishingly fast. If you cannot take your dog with you when you park, leave them at home.
## Frequently asked questions
**Is it illegal to drive with an unrestrained dog in the UK?** Rule 57 of the Highway Code is advisory ("should"), not a direct offence in itself. But if a loose dog causes you to drive without proper control or due care, that is an offence, and it can invalidate your insurance in a claim. In practice, restraining your dog is essential.
**What is the safest way for a dog to travel in a car?** There is no single answer, but a sturdy, secured crate or a crash-tested seatbelt harness on the back seat are both excellent. A dog guard keeps the dog away from the driver but restrains less in a crash.
**Can I use my dog's normal walking harness in the car?** No. A walking harness is not designed to take crash forces and can injure a dog in an impact. Use a harness specifically made, and ideally crash-tested, for car travel.
**Where should my dog sit in the car?** In the back, restrained, either in the boot (crate or behind a guard) or on the back seat in a car harness. Never on your lap or in the front footwell.
