# Dog ID Tags and Microchipping Law in the UK: What Every Owner Should Know

If there is one bit of dog law worth getting right, it is this one, because it is the law that gets your dog home if the worst happens and they go missing. I am asked about it surprisingly often in the salon, usually by new puppy owners, and there is a lot of muddle out there. The short version is that in the UK you need both a microchip and a collar tag, not one or the other. Let me lay it out plainly so you know exactly where you stand.
## Microchipping is compulsory
Since 2016 it has been a legal requirement for all dogs in England, Scotland and Wales to be [microchipped](https://www.gov.uk/get-your-dog-microchipped) and registered on an approved database by the time they are eight weeks old. A microchip is a tiny device, about the size of a grain of rice, placed under the skin between the shoulder blades by a vet or trained professional. It carries a unique number that links to your contact details on a database.
Breeders must microchip puppies and register their own details first, then transfer the registration to you when you take the puppy home. If you take on an older or rescue dog, they should already be chipped, but check.
## You must keep the details up to date
Here is the part people forget. A microchip is only as good as the information attached to it, and it is a legal requirement to keep your registered details current. If you move house or change your phone number, update the database. A chip that pings up an old address and a dead phone number will not get your dog home. It is a five-minute job, so do it the moment anything changes.
## The collar and tag rule still applies
This trips a lot of people up: being microchipped does not remove the need for a collar and tag. Under the Control of Dogs Order, any dog in a public place must wear a collar with the owner's name and address on it, either on the collar itself or on an attached tag. Your phone number is sensible to add but not legally required, and there is no legal need to put your dog's name on it.
> **Worth knowing:** The two systems do different jobs. A tag means a member of the public can read your details and phone you straight away, the fastest route home. The microchip is the permanent backup, scanned by a vet, warden or rescue if the collar has come off. You genuinely need both.
## The penalties for getting it wrong
This is not law to shrug at. If your dog is not microchipped when it should be, you can be served a notice and given 21 days to comply, and you can be [fined up to £500](https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2015/108/contents/made) if you do not. Walking a dog in public without the required collar and tag can also land you a fine. Beyond the money, though, the real cost of getting this wrong is a lost dog nobody can reunite with you.
## A quick checklist for owners
- Your dog is microchipped and registered on an approved database.
- Your contact details on the chip are current, especially after a house move.
- Your dog wears a collar in public with your name and address on the tag.
- The tag is legible and the collar fits properly, snug with room for two fingers.
- If you take on a new dog, you have transferred the chip registration into your name.
It is a small bit of admin for a very big payoff. Every microchip check we hear about that reunites a family is worth the five minutes it takes to keep it right.
