No wondering whether your dog is welcome, no apologising, just fields full of happy hounds, have a go rings and far too many treat stalls. York and the wider Yorkshire area put on some genuinely good ones through the year, from a friendly local show right in the city to big travelling festivals a short drive away. Here is what is worth knowing before you go.
## The York Dog Show at Museum Gardens
Right in the heart of the city, the [Yorkshire Museum Gardens](https://www.yorkmuseumgardens.org.uk/), cared for by York Museums Trust, host the York Dog Show. It is a lovely, low pressure fun show set among ten acres of botanical gardens and the ruins of St Mary's Abbey, with novelty classes like waggiest tail and best rescue rather than serious pedigree judging.
It is the perfect first show for a dog who has never done one. The classes are gentle, the atmosphere is relaxed, and you are surrounded by other owners who are all there for the same reason. Dogs are welcome on leads in the gardens, so even if you are not competing it is a nice place to spend an afternoon.
## DogFest at Harewood House
