These are places where dogs are bred for profit in poor conditions, often with little regard for health, socialisation or welfare. The puppies that come from them frequently arrive sick, frightened or carrying problems that surface weeks later. The single best thing you can do to shut these places down is to refuse to buy from them, and this guide will help you recognise and sidestep them. ## Know the law: Lucy's Law Since April 2020, the law has been on your side. [Lucy's Law means puppies and kittens can no longer be sold by third party sellers such as pet shops or commercial dealers](https://www.gov.uk/government/news/lucys-law-spells-the-beginning-of-the-end-for-puppy-farming) in England. You must buy directly from the breeder who raised the puppy, or adopt from a genuine rehoming centre. It was named after Lucy, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who suffered terribly on a Welsh puppy farm. If a seller is a middleman, or cannot show you where the puppy was born, they are operating outside the spirit of the law and you should walk away. ## Always see the puppy with its mum If you take one thing from this article, make it this. Seeing the puppy interacting with its mother, in the place it was actually born, is the strongest protection you have. It proves the puppy was raised there rather than shipped in for the sale, and it lets you check the mum is healthy, calm and clearly part of the household. A breeder who makes excuses about why mum is not around, she is at the vet, she is out with a friend, she is nervous of strangers, is showing you a red flag the size of a house. > **Worth knowing:** A meeting in a car park, layby, service station or on a doorstep is a classic puppy farm tactic. A genuine breeder will always want you to come to their home and see the litter in situ. ## The warning signs to watch for The [PDSA has a detailed guide to spotting a puppy farm](https://www.pdsa.org.uk/pet-help-and-advice/looking-after-your-pet/puppies-dogs/could-you-spot-a-puppy-farm), and the recurring red flags are worth memorising: - **The seller** will not let you visit their home, has several breeds or litters going at once, asks you no questions, or wants cash only - **The location** has puppies kept in outbuildings, sealed off rooms, or a home the pups clearly are not familiar with - **The puppies** are offered underage, seem unwell, are kept away from their mother, or do not match the advert - **The sale** feels rushed, with pressure to decide and pay on the day ## Buying online: extra caution Many puppy farms hide behind slick online adverts and social media, so treat the internet with real scepticism. Never buy a puppy sight unseen, never pay a deposit before visiting, and be wary of professional looking photos that could be anyone's dog. If a deal feels too easy, too cheap or too quick, it usually is. ## If you suspect a puppy farm Please do not buy the puppy out of pity, however hard that is, because every sale funds the next litter of suffering. Instead, walk away and report your concerns to your local council's animal licensing team and to the RSPCA. Reporting is how these operations get investigated and shut down, and it protects the countless puppies still to come. ## Frequently asked questions **What exactly is a puppy farm?** It is a high volume breeding operation that prioritises profit over welfare, keeping breeding dogs in poor conditions and churning out puppies with little care for their health or socialisation. **Does Lucy's Law mean puppy farms are gone?** Not entirely.
