# Pro Technique: How to Clip a Matted Dog Safely

A welfare-first groomer's guide to safely clipping a matted dog, getting under mats with the right blade, avoiding clipper burn and nicks, plus aftercare.

Every groomer meets the pelted dog eventually. The owner apologises at the door, the coat is a solid felt against the skin, and the kind, professional thing to do is almost always to clip it off. I want to talk through how I approach a badly matted dog safely, because this is the job where welfare has to lead every single decision we make. A tight mat is not a styling problem, it is a comfort and skin-health problem, and our job is to relieve it without hurting the dog in the process. Matting that is left to tighten can [cause discomfort, skin irritation and even disease](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog_grooming), which is exactly why we act on it.

Let me be clear from the start. We do not brush out a severely pelted coat. Dragging a slicker through tight, skin-level matting is painful, it damages the skin, and it is not something a good groomer does to hit a fluffy finish. When in doubt, clip it out.

## Assess honestly before you start

Run your hands over the whole dog and find where the coat lifts away from the skin and where it does not. Tight mats sit right against the skin, and the skin underneath is often red, thin or sore. Look for lumps, warts and skin folds hiding under the felt, because these are exactly what you will nick if you clip blind.

Have an honest word with the owner. Explain that the humane option is a short clip, that the skin underneath may look pink or irritated once it is exposed, and that the coat will grow back. Managing that expectation up front saves a lot of upset later.

## Getting under the mat with the right blade

The technique that keeps a matted dog safe is getting the blade underneath the felt, between the mat and the skin, rather than trying to cut through it from above.

1. Reach for a shorter blade than you would use on a healthy coat. A tight pelt often needs a 10 or even shorter to slide beneath it, because a longer blade simply will not fit into the gap between felt and skin.
2. Work from an edge where you can find skin, lift the mat slightly, and slide the blade flat under it, keeping the blade parallel to the skin so the teeth glide rather than dig.
3. Keep the skin taut and flat with your free hand, especially over folds like the armpits, groin, tummy and around the tail, where skin bunches and catches.
4. Take your time and let the clipper do the work. If it stalls, you are forcing it. Reposition and find the channel underneath again.

> **Welfare note:** If a coat is pelted to the point that the dog is distressed, the skin is broken, or you simply cannot get a blade under safely, stop and involve a vet. Some severe cases need clipping under sedation for the dog's sake, and there is no shame in that call. The dog's welfare comes before any finish.

## Avoiding clipper burn and nicks

Two things hurt a matted dog on the table, a hot blade and a caught fold. Guard against both.

- **Heat.** Matted work runs the blade hard, and blades get hot fast. Check the blade against the back of your hand often, swap to a spare to let it cool, and use a cooling spray. A blade that feels warm to you feels far hotter dragged along thin, exposed skin.
- **Nicks.** Never clip into a bunched fold. Stretch the skin flat first. Go slowly over the armpits, flanks, sanitary area and the tips of the ears, which are thin and easy to catch. Watch for warts and skin tags and clip around them.
- **Direction.** On a pelt you often clip with the lie of the coat where you can, staying under the mat. Keep strokes short and controlled rather than long and hopeful.

If the mat lifts away in a sheet as you go under it, that is exactly right. You are separating the felt from the skin cleanly, which is far kinder than sawing through it.

## The humane shave-down

Sometimes the whole coat has to come off short and even. That is a humane shave-down, and it is a welcome relief for the dog, not a failure. Take the whole coat to a consistent, safe length, keep checking the skin as you expose it, and do not chase a pretty outline over an area that is sore. Comfort first, tidiness second. The coat grows back, and next time, with a better routine, it need never get to this point.

## Aftercare

Once the coat is off, the skin needs looking after.

- A gentle, soothing bath helps calm freshly exposed skin, but keep it low stress and be careful over any grazed patches.
- Dry thoroughly on a cool setting. Newly shorn skin is sensitive to heat.
- Point out any redness, sores or lumps you found to the owner, and where the skin looks broken or infected, send them to a vet. Groomers spot skin problems early, and that is a genuine service to the dog. The [RSPCA's grooming and welfare guidance](https://www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/pets/dogs/health/grooming) reflects the standard of care owners should be able to expect from a professional.
- Talk the owner through prevention, regular brushing to the skin, more frequent salon visits and a manageable coat length, so the dog does not pelt again.

Clipping a matted dog well is one of the most quietly satisfying jobs we do. The dog walks out lighter, more comfortable and able to move freely, and that is the whole point.

## Frequently asked questions

**Should I ever try to brush out a severely matted coat?** No. Brushing out tight, skin-level pelting is painful and damages the skin. The humane approach is to clip the matting off with a short blade worked underneath it. Save de-matting for loose, early tangles only.

**Which blade is best for a pelted dog?** A shorter blade, often a 10 or shorter, so it fits into the gap between the felt and the skin. Longer blades cannot get under a tight mat and are far more likely to catch and nick.

**How do I stop the blade burning the dog?** Check the blade temperature against your hand frequently, keep a spare to swap in while one cools, use a cooling spray, and never labour a hot blade over thin skin. Heat builds quickly during matted work.

**When should a matted dog go to the vet instead?** When the skin is broken or infected, when the dog is too distressed or painful to handle, or when the coat is so tight that safe clipping is not possible awake. Some cases are best clipped under veterinary sedation.
