Done well, the finish is unmistakable: a soft, dense, perfectly round cloud of pure white coat with a head that looks like a full moon. Done poorly, it looks flat, patchy or grey. The breed rewards patience, a good eye and clean white-coat management more than any fancy clipper work, and that is what makes it such a good breed to test your finishing skills on. Here is how I approach a Bichon from the ground up. ## The powder-puff coat The Bichon has a soft, dense double coat: a fine, corkscrew-curled outer coat over a softer undercoat, and it should feel springy under the hand, a bit like plush velvet. That density is what lets you scissor into it and hold a round, sculpted shape, but it is also what makes it matt at friction points if home care slips. The [Bichon's coat should be pure white](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bichon_Frise), which sets a high bar for cleanliness, because any staining or dinginess shows instantly against that brief. The [Royal Kennel Club breed standards](https://www.royalkennelclub.com/breed-standards/) describe the ideal outline you are working towards. ## Step one: brush out and check to the skin Line brush the whole dog with a slicker and confirm with a comb that you have reached the skin everywhere. Bichons hide matting in the softer areas: behind the ears, in the armpits, around the sanitary region and on the legs. If the coat is pelted, make the kind decision to clip under the matting rather than force a comb through it, and talk to the owner about maintenance. > **Groomer's tip:** Resist the urge to bath a matted Bichon first. Water shrinks and tightens curly matting into a solid felt. Get as much matting out (or clipped out) as you sensibly can before the coat ever gets wet, then bath the clean coat. ## Step two: whitening bath and thorough rinse White coats need a proper bath routine. Start with a clarifying wash to strip dirt and oil, then use a good whitening or brightening shampoo, working it well into the legs, feet, face and sanitary areas where staining collects. Let a whitening product sit for the recommended time, then rinse until the water is completely clear. Condition lightly to help the blow-out. Never use human whitening products or anything harsh near the eyes; keep it gentle and dog-specific. ## Step three: high-velocity dry straight and full Blow the coat dry and straight while it is still damp, lifting and stretching the curl as you go. A Bichon finish depends on a fully dried, fluffed coat that stands away from the body, because you cannot scissor a round shape into a flat, damp coat. Keep the airflow off the eyes and out of the ear canal, and take your time so the whole coat is dry to the skin. Comb it all up and out before you scissor. ## Step four: the round scissor This is the heart of Bichon grooming, and it is nearly all scissor work. The goal is a smooth, rounded, powder-puff outline with no flat spots and no hard corners. 1. **Set the body length** with an even skim, keeping it fuller than a typical pet trim so you have coat to sculpt. 2. **Scissor the outline** into soft curves: a rounded rump, a level topline, and legs that read as clean columns from every angle. 3. **Build the head** last. The Bichon head is scissored into a round shape, blending the ears into the cheeks so the whole thing reads as one balanced sphere, with the eyes framed but clear. 4. **Comb and refine.** Comb up, look for lumps and hollows, and keep tipping the coat back into a perfect round. Curved shears help you follow the breed's curves. Step back constantly and check symmetry from the front, side and rear. On a Bichon the outline is the entire job. ## Step five: face, eyes and tear stains The face makes or breaks the finish. Scissor a rounded, open face that keeps hair out of the eyes, and clean the eye corners gently. Tear staining is common on this breed and it is mostly a management issue: keep the hair around the eyes trimmed short and tidy so moisture does not sit and stain, and advise owners to wipe the area daily with a suitable product. Persistent, heavy staining, or any sign of a sore or runny eye, is a reason to send the owner to their vet, because it can point to a blocked tear duct or irritation rather than just cosmetics. ## Frequently asked questions **How do I keep a Bichon's coat truly white?** It is bath technique plus home maintenance. Clarify first, then use a dog-safe whitening shampoo left on for the full contact time, rinse spotless, and dry fully. Between grooms, owners should wipe stained areas and keep the coat clean and brushed. Whitening cannot fix a dirty, matted coat. **Why does my scissored Bichon look flat, not round?** Almost always an under-dried or under-combed coat. If the coat is not blown fully straight and fluffed up and out, you are scissoring a collapsed shape. Dry it properly, comb everything up, then sculpt. **Can I clip a Bichon short instead of scissoring?** A shorter clipped trim is a fine, kind option for pets whose owners cannot maintain a full powder-puff, and it is much easier to keep clean. You lose the classic look, but a comfortable, matt-free dog matters more than the show outline. **When should tear staining go to a vet?** When it is sudden, heavy, one-sided, or comes with redness, discharge or squinting.
