A Pomeranian is a proper little double-coated spitz packed into a very small dog, and it deserves the same coat respect you would give a Samoyed. The Pom is a lovely breed to groom when you keep the coat healthy and fluffy, and one where the biggest risk is a well-meaning owner asking for a teddy shave that you should gently talk them out of. This is a breed all about that stand-off ruff and a tidy, natural outline. Here is how I approach a Pomeranian on the table. ## The coat: a small dog with a big double coat The Pomeranian has a dense double coat: a soft, fluffy undercoat under a longer, harsher topcoat that stands off the body, most dramatically around the neck and chest where it forms the signature ruff. Despite the small size, this coat sheds and needs the same deshedding and drying discipline as any spitz. The classic Pom look is that round, fox-like fluffiness. We achieve it by clearing dead undercoat, drying the coat up and out, and neatening the outline with scissors. We do not get it by shaving. ## Step one: line brush and check for undercoat Start on a dry coat with a slicker and a comb, line brushing in sections from the skin outwards. Pay attention behind the ears, in the ruff, the trousers and under the tail, where dead undercoat gathers and small mats can form. Because Poms are small, it is easy to skim the surface and miss packed undercoat next to the skin, so test with your comb right down to the skin. If there is matting, work it out gently and dry. Never bath a matted coat. ## Step two: bath and dry up and out Bath with a clarifying or deshedding shampoo worked down to the skin, then a light conditioner to keep the topcoat glossy without flattening the stand-off. For pale Poms, a whitening shampoo on the white areas can brighten the finish. Rinse thoroughly, because residue in this dense little coat leaves the dog itchy and the coat flat. Dry with a high-velocity dryer on a suitably gentle setting for a small dog, working in the direction of coat growth to blast out the dead undercoat, then dry the coat up and out to encourage that fluffy stand-off. Follow with a rake to clear the loosened undercoat. A brush-and-blow finish, drying while brushing against the lie of the coat, is what gives a Pom its full, round look. > **Welfare note:** Talk owners out of the shave-down or teddy shave. Beyond flattening the breed's whole character, shaving a Pomeranian carries a real risk of post-clip alopecia, sometimes called coat funk, where the coat regrows slowly, patchily, or not at all. Once you have seen a shaved Pom that never recovered its coat, you never want to be the groomer who caused it. Offer a tidy trim that keeps the double coat intact instead. ## Step three: tidy trimming, not shaving The Pomeranian is neatened with scissors over a healthy, dried coat, not clipped down. Tidy the feet into a neat round, following the pad, and clean up the hair between the pads. Trim round the hocks to a clean line and neaten the rear so the dog looks balanced from behind. Tidy the sanitary area for hygiene. For the outline, scissor the coat into that soft, rounded, fox-like shape, blending the ruff into the body so there are no hard lines. Some owners like a shorter, tidier pet trim, and that is fine as long as you leave enough length to protect the double coat. What you are avoiding is taking the blade down to the skin. Neaten the ears into small rounded triangles and tidy any stray hairs on the face. ## Step four: finishing and the once-over Finish with nails, which on such a small dog need a careful, light touch. Check and clean the ears and make sure they are dry. Run your hands over the whole dog for any lumps, sore spots or dental concerns and mention anything worth checking to the owner for their vet.
