# Pro Technique: How to Groom a Poodle Face, Feet and Tail

A groomer's step-by-step guide to the poodle clean face, feet and pompom tail: fine blades, safe clipping around the eyes, and getting clean, tidy lines.

The clean face, clean feet and pompom tail are the signature of a poodle groom, and they are also where a lot of newer groomers hold their breath. There is close blade work right by the eyes, delicate skin between the pads, and a tail that needs to look like a proper pompom rather than a shaving accident. None of it is difficult once you understand the technique and, crucially, respect the safety points. Here is how I work through the face, feet and tail on a [poodle](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poodle) in the salon.

A quick word on blades before we start. The clean areas on a poodle are done with a fine blade, commonly a 15 or a 10 depending on the dog and the season, worked against the grain for a smooth finish. A 10 is kinder on sensitive or thinner skin and a safe default if you are less experienced; a 15 gives a closer, cleaner look. Whatever you reach for, keep it sharp, keep it cool, and check its temperature against your wrist regularly. A hot blade on bare face skin is a burn waiting to happen.

## The clean face: slow, calm and eyes first

Face clipping is all about control and reading the dog. Have the dog settled and, ideally, working one-to-one so there are no distractions. I steady the muzzle with one hand and clip with the other, never rushing.

Start by clipping the cheeks and down the sides of the muzzle with the lie of the coat, then come back against the grain for that smooth poodle finish. Work down the muzzle to the nose, and clip a neat line under the eyes. The area to respect most is the inner corner of the eye and the bridge of the nose. Use the tip of the blade, go slowly, and keep the skin gently taut with your free hand so it cannot fold into the blade.

Clip the throat down to the point where you want your neckline, usually an Adam's apple V, and tidy the underjaw. Keep checking the blade temperature throughout, because faces are done in several passes and blades heat up fast.

> **Safety note:** Never clip toward the eye. Always work the blade away from or alongside the eye, keep the skin smooth with your supporting hand, and if the dog is fidgety, stop and reset rather than pushing on. One sudden head-turn near the eye is why we take face work slowly and never with a jumpy dog. The eyes are unforgiving, so caution here is not optional.

## Clean feet: the tricky bit made simple

Poodle feet look fiddly but follow a reliable routine. First, splay the paw gently in your hand and clip the top of the foot from the toenails back to the base of the ankle, following the natural shape. Then, and this is the part people rush, tip the foot up and clip between the pads on the underside, clearing the hair from between the toes so nothing mats or packs down there.

Work each toe individually. Keep the skin between the toes spread and taut so the webbing does not catch, and use the tip of the blade with a light hand. Finish by tidying a clean, round line where the clipped foot meets the leg hair, so you get that crisp bracelet edge poodle legs are known for. Neaten the nails and you are done.

## The pompom tail

The tail pompom is a lovely finish and quick once you know the shape. Decide where the base of the pompom sits, usually leaving roughly the last third to half of the tail in coat, and clip the base of the tail clean with your fine blade, both the underside and the top, up to that point. Clip carefully around the anus with the very tip of the blade and a light touch, as the skin there is thin.

Then comb the remaining tail hair out in all directions and scissor it into a round, balanced pompom, turning the tail as you go and checking it from every angle. Aim for a ball that is symmetrical and in proportion to the dog. Finish by blending the clipped base neatly into the pompom so there is no ragged join.

## Frequently asked questions

**Should I use a 10 or a 15 blade on a poodle face?** Both are standard. A 10 is gentler and a safer choice on sensitive or thin skin and for less experienced hands. A 15 gives a closer, cleaner finish. Whichever you use, keep it sharp and cool, and always check the temperature against your skin between passes.

**How do I avoid clipper rash on the face and feet?** Use a sharp, cool blade, do not press hard, and do not go over the same bare skin repeatedly. Clipping with the grain first and finishing against it, rather than forcing a close cut in one pass, reduces irritation. A soothing spray afterwards helps sensitive dogs.

**The dog will not sit still for face clipping. What now?** Do not clip a wriggling dog near the eyes, it is not worth the risk. Work one-to-one, take breaks, reward calm, and build the dog's tolerance over several visits if needed. For truly difficult dogs, a scissored tidy is safer than close blade work until they settle.

**How big should the tail pompom be?** In proportion to the dog and balanced with the head and legs. As a starting point, leave roughly the last third to half of the tail in coat, then scissor it into a round, even ball. Step back and check it against the whole dog, not just on its own.
