[Lucy](https://www.fluffsyork.co.uk/dog-grooming-tips-and-tricks/author/lucy) Aug 4, 2026 --- The Airedale is the king of the terriers, the largest of the group, and grooming one properly is one of the more rewarding jobs on the diary. Underneath that smart, square outline is a harsh, wiry, broken outer coat over a soft undercoat, and how you handle that coat determines everything about the finish. Get it right and you turn out a crisp, hard-jacketed terrier with tidy furnishings and a proper Airedale head. Get it wrong, or just clip everything off for speed, and you lose the colour, the texture and the whole point of the breed. This is how I approach an Airedale, and the big decision you make before you start: strip or clip. ## Hand-strip or clip: make the call first The Airedale's coat is designed to be hand-stripped. Because the wiry outer coat does not shed naturally, hand-stripping, pulling the dead outer hairs out by the root a few at a time so fresh, hard, richly coloured coat grows back, keeps the correct harsh texture and the deep black-and-tan colour. Clipping, by contrast, cuts the coat rather than removing it, which over time softens the texture and fades the colour to a woolly, greyish jacket. Neither is wrong as such, but the choice shapes the whole groom. - **Show or coat-correct dogs:** hand-strip. You keep texture, colour and a proper working coat. - **Pet dogs whose owners want low fuss:** clipping is the practical, comfortable option, as long as everyone understands the trade-off in colour and texture. If the dead hair does not lift cleanly and the dog flinches, it is not blown and you are pulling live coat. Work rolling sessions on a coat that is coming loose, keep the dog comfortable, and use finger and thumb or a stripping knife with a light touch, never a heavy drag. ## The Airedale pattern Whether you strip or clip, the pattern is the same, and it is what makes the dog read as an Airedale: - **Jacket:** short and tight over the body, neck, shoulders and down the sides. This is the hard, textured section. - **Furnishings:** the legs are left longer and shaped into clean columns, with the softer leg hair scissored rather than stripped hard. - **Head:** a flat, tidy skull with a strong, brick-shaped muzzle, tight cheeks, and a full beard and eyebrows shaped to give that classic keen terrier expression. ## Working the coat, step by step 1. **Prep.** Brush and comb the furnishings right out first, checking for mats between the legs, in the beard and under the armpits. Clear any matting before you bath. 2. **Bath and dry.** For a stripped dog, bath after the strip session or well before it, not right before stripping, as a freshly washed coat is harder to grip. For a clipped dog, bath first. Dry straight with the high-velocity dryer, brushing the furnishings out as you go. 3. **The jacket.** Strip the dead outer coat from the body down the neck, back and sides, keeping it tight and following the natural lie, or clip the same area with an appropriate blade if the owner has chosen a clip. Blend the jacket into the furnishings so there is no hard line where they meet. 4. **The legs.** Comb the leg furnishings up and scissor them into straight, clean cylinders, tidy round the feet, and blend into the body. Neat legs make the whole trim look professional. 5. **The head and beard.** Tidy the skull, keep the cheeks clean, and scissor the beard and eyebrows to shape. The eyebrows are shorter at the outer corner and longer toward the inner, framing the eye and giving expression. 6. **The finish.** Tidy the underline, the rear and the sanitary area, check the feet, and go over the whole outline for a crisp, square silhouette. ## Ears, nails and the details Check and clean the ears, keep the ear leathers neat, and manage any hair around the opening lightly and only as needed. Trim the feet tidy, keep nails in check, and make sure the tuck-up and rear are clean. On an Airedale the details are what sell the trim, so it is worth the extra few minutes going round the outline at the end. ## Frequently asked questions **How often should an Airedale be groomed?** A clipped pet Airedale suits a full groom every six to eight weeks. A hand-stripped coat runs on a rolling cycle, with regular sessions to keep the coat rolling and the colour and texture correct, plus furnishing maintenance in between. **Is it ever fine to clip an Airedale rather than strip?** Yes, for pet dogs whose owners want simplicity, or where a dog will not tolerate stripping. You just accept the softer texture and faded colour that come with clipping, and you make sure the owner understands that before you start. **Why does hand-stripping keep the colour?** Because you remove the dead, faded outer hairs at the root and let fresh, hard, deeply pigmented coat grow through. Clipping cuts across the hair shaft and leaves the softer, paler undercoat showing, which is why clipped wire coats go grey and woolly over time. **What is the hardest part of an Airedale trim for a newer groomer?** The furnishings and the head. Straight, blended leg columns and a well-shaped beard and brow take practice.
