# Pro Technique: How to High-Velocity Dry a Dog

A groomer's step-by-step on high-velocity drying: loosening undercoat, straightening coat, and protecting ears, eyes and skin from heat and blast.

The high-velocity dryer is probably the most transformative tool in [dog grooming](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog_grooming), and also the one most often used badly. Done well it blasts loose undercoat out of the coat, straightens curls ready for scissoring and cuts drying time right down. Done carelessly it terrifies the dog, whips ears and skin, and misses half the coat. This is how I use an HV dryer properly, with the dog's comfort and safety front and centre.

## What the HV dryer actually does

An HV dryer works on air pressure, not heat. That distinction matters. A powerful, focused column of moving air pushes water off the coat and, crucially, drives loose dead undercoat up and out ahead of it. On a double coat in [moult](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moulting) it is doing the real deshedding work that no brush alone will match. On a curly or wavy coat it lifts and straightens the hair as it dries, giving you a coat that stands and scissors cleanly.

Because it is about air force rather than heat, the number one rule is respect the blast. That column of air is strong enough to hurt eyes, force water into ears and distress a nervous dog, so where you point it and how you introduce it is everything.

## Introduce it kindly, especially the first time

Never just fire an HV dryer straight at a dog's face and hope. Start the dryer away from the dog so it hears the noise first, then bring the airflow onto the body, usually the shoulder or back, where it is least threatening. Let the dog feel it on a robust area before you go anywhere near the sensitive parts. A calm introduction now saves you a fight every visit.

Keep the nozzle moving. A stationary blast on one spot is uncomfortable and can irritate skin, so sweep steadily and work in the direction that lifts and clears the coat.

> **Safety note:** Never aim high-velocity air directly at the eyes, into the ear canal, or at the genitals. Protect the ears by holding the ear flap down and gently covering the canal with your hand or a finger as you pass, and dry the head last, on a lower setting or by hand, with the airflow directed away from the eyes. Force plus the wrong angle is how dogs get hurt.

## The step-by-step

1. **Towel first.** Blot and squeeze excess water out with a towel before you start. The dryer is for the coat, not for shifting a soaking-wet dog from scratch.
2. **Start on the body.** Bring the airflow onto the shoulder or back so the dog settles to the sensation before you move on.
3. **Work with the coat and against the water.** Move the nozzle in steady sweeps, pushing water off and driving loose undercoat out ahead of the air. Keep the nozzle a sensible distance from the skin.
4. **Section as you go.** Work methodically, body, legs, chest, then the awkward areas, so you dry the coat right down to the skin and do not leave damp patches that will not scissor.
5. **Support and steady the dog.** Keep a hand on the dog, keep them balanced on the table and never let the blast unbalance them. Take breaks if a nervous dog needs one.
6. **Head and ears last.** Do the face and ears carefully, ears protected, eyes shielded, on the gentlest approach, often finishing the head by hand.
7. **Check for dryness to the skin.** Part the coat and feel the base. A coat that feels dry on top but damp underneath is not dry, and it will let you down at the scissoring stage.

## Watch the heat, watch the dog

Many HV dryers add a little warmth, and some run warmer than you would expect once they have been going a while. Keep checking the air temperature against your own hand, because a coat drying under prolonged warm air can heat up more than you realise, and thin-skinned or clipped-short dogs feel it fastest. This is a real welfare point: dogs can overheat under a dryer, so never leave a dog drying unattended, keep sessions sensible and stop if the dog is distressed or the skin feels hot. When in doubt, cooler and slower.

Older dogs, flat-faced (brachycephalic) breeds and any dog with breathing or heart concerns need extra care and patience, and anything that looks like genuine distress means stop and reassess.

## FAQ

**Is it the heat or the air that dries the coat?** Mostly the air. An HV dryer works by pushing water off and out of the coat with high-pressure airflow, which is why it also drives loose undercoat out. Any warmth is secondary, so never rely on heat and always watch that it does not build up.

**How do I HV dry a dog that hates the noise?** Introduce it gradually. Let the dog hear the dryer running away from them, start the airflow on the body not the face, keep sessions short at first and build tolerance over visits. Forcing a frightened dog only makes the next groom harder.

**How do I protect the ears during high-velocity drying?** Hold the ear flap down over the canal and cover it with your hand as you pass, keep the airflow off the head until last, and finish the head gently or by hand. Never blast air directly into an ear.

**Why is my coat still not scissoring well after drying?** It is probably still damp at the base. Part the coat and feel down to the skin. HV dry right to the skin and straighten curly coats as you go, because a coat that is dry only on the surface will never scissor cleanly.
