# Pro Technique: How to Prep a Coat Before Grooming

A groomer's guide to coat prep: the rough brush-out and deshed before the bath, why prep matters, and checking for mats and skin issues first.

Ask any experienced groomer where a good groom is won or lost and most of us will say the same thing: before the dog ever gets wet. Coat prep is the unglamorous bit, the rough brush-out and [deshed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog_grooming) that happens before the bath, and it is the part newer groomers are most tempted to rush. Do not. A proper prep is what makes everything downstream, the bath, the dry, the finish, quicker, cleaner and kinder to the dog. Skip it and you are fighting the coat all day.

Let me walk through how I prep a coat and why each step earns its place.

## Why prep before the bath, not after

The golden rule is that water sets mats. A tangle that would have brushed out dry becomes a tight, felted lump the moment it gets soaked and then dried, because wetting and drying shrinks and locks the hair together. So the rough work always comes first, on a dry or barely damp coat, before any shampoo goes anywhere near it.

Prepping first also means the bath actually does its job. Shampoo cannot penetrate a dense, dead-hair-clogged coat, and water just sits on top of matted areas rather than cleaning the skin beneath. Lift out the dead undercoat and open the coat up first, and the bath cleans properly, rinses faster and dries in a fraction of the time.

## Step one: a hands-on check

Before I pick up a single tool, my hands go over the whole dog. I am feeling for mats and the density of any I find, for lumps and bumps, for sore or thin patches of skin, for grass seeds between the toes, for lodged debris in the coat, and for any flinch that tells me an area is tender.

This matters for two reasons. First, welfare: I need to know what I am working with before I start pulling a brush through it, so I do not drag over a hidden sore or an ear that is infected. Second, it shapes the whole plan. A coat that is matted to the skin needs a completely different approach from one that just needs a tidy, and I want to know that before I commit.

> **Welfare note:** If you find mats that are tight to the skin, do not try to brute-force them out with a brush or comb. Yanking at a felted mat is genuinely painful, tears at the skin and can leave brush burn. The kind, correct answer is to clip the matted area out cleanly with the right blade underneath the mat. Comfort comes before appearance every single time, and any owner will understand that once you explain it.

## Step two: the rough brush-out and deshed

With the check done, I work through the coat systematically so nothing gets missed. I go section by section, usually starting at the back end and working forward and downward, brushing in the direction of growth and always right down to the skin rather than skimming the top.

The tools depend on the coat:

- **[Double coats](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coat_(dog))** (Huskies, GSDs, Spitz types): an undercoat rake and a deshedding tool to pull out the loose, dead undercoat that would otherwise clog the whole groom. This is [deshedding](https://www.fluffsyork.co.uk/dog-deshedding-prices-in-york), and it is the heart of prep on these breeds. Never reach for the clippers on a healthy double coat, the answer is always to deshed, not to shave.
- **Curly and wavy coats** (Poodles, doodles): a slicker brush followed by a comb to check your work. If a comb will not glide through, the coat is not brushed out, no matter how good the surface looks.
- **Wire coats:** a rough tidy and, where you are maintaining texture, this is the stage for hand-stripping dead coat rather than clipping it.
- **Silky and long coats:** a pin brush and slicker, working gently through feathering and furnishings where tangles love to hide.

The comb is your honesty check throughout. A slicker makes the surface look finished long before the coat truly is, so I follow up with a comb right to the skin, and if it snags, I go back in.

## Step three: line brushing for anything dense

On thick or long coats I line brush, parting the coat and working it in horizontal sections from the skin outward, laying each finished layer down before moving up to the next. It is slower but it is the only way to guarantee you have reached the skin across the whole dog rather than leaving a soft mat quietly forming underneath a nicely brushed surface.

By the time prep is finished, the dog should be tangle-free, the dead coat lifted out, any problem areas noted and dealt with, and the coat open and ready for a bath that will actually clean it. That is prep doing its job: everything after it becomes easier because of it.

## Frequently asked questions

**Why can't I just brush the mats out after the bath?** Because water and heat set mats solid. Wetting a tangle and then drying it shrinks and felts the hair, turning a brushable knot into a locked-on mat. All the rough de-tangling and deshedding has to happen on a dry coat before any water touches it.

**What's the difference between a rough brush-out and a deshed?** A rough brush-out clears tangles and surface debris on any coat. A deshed specifically pulls the dead, loose undercoat out of a double coat using a rake or deshedding tool. On double-coated breeds the deshed is the main event of prep and replaces any thought of clipping.

**How do I know when a coat is properly prepped?** The comb test. Run a comb from the skin outward across the whole dog. If it glides through cleanly everywhere, the coat is ready. If it snags anywhere, that section needs more work, however finished the surface looks under a slicker.

**Should I prep a matted dog or just clip it off?** Assess first with your hands. Light, brushable tangles can be worked out dry. Mats that are tight to the skin should be clipped out under the mat, not forced through with a brush, because brute-forcing them hurts the dog. Welfare decides, not the finish.
