# How to Set Up a Dog Grooming Business in the UK

A salon owner's practical guide to setting up a dog grooming business in the UK: business plan, registering with HMRC, premises, kit and winning first clients.

Going from employed groomer to running your own business is a genuinely exciting leap, and it is one I made myself when I opened Fluffs. It is also a leap that catches a lot of talented groomers out, because being brilliant with a pair of scissors is only half the job. The other half is running a proper little business. So let me share how I would approach setting one up, from the paperwork to the first clients through the door.

## Start with a simple business plan

You do not need a fifty-page document. You need clarity on a few things: who your clients are, what you will charge, what it costs you to operate, and how many dogs a week you need to groom to make it work. Write down your likely weekly costs (rent or fuel, products, insurance, kit replacement) and your realistic capacity, then work out the price point that leaves you a proper income. Groomers who skip this step often undercharge, exhaust themselves, and wonder why the numbers never add up. A plan is just you being honest with yourself on paper before you commit money to it.

## Register with HMRC

Once you are earning, you must tell the taxman. Most new groomers start as a sole trader, which is the simplest structure and the easiest to run. You register for Self Assessment and, in short, you keep records of your income and expenses and pay Income Tax and National Insurance on your profit. The official [set up as a sole trader](https://www.gov.uk/set-up-sole-trader) guidance walks you through registering, and there is a clear step-by-step on becoming [self-employed](https://www.gov.uk/set-up-self-employed) too. Do this early, keep your bookkeeping tidy from day one, and put money aside for your tax bill so it never comes as a shock.

> **Groomer's tip:** Open a separate bank account for the business from the very first day. Mixing personal and business money is the single most common bookkeeping headache I see, and it is so easily avoided. Every payment in and every product bought goes through that account, and your year-end tax return becomes a five-minute job instead of a weekend of dread.

## Insurance and the essentials

Before a single client dog crosses your threshold, sort your insurance. You want public liability cover and, importantly, care, custody and control cover, which protects you if a dog in your charge is injured. If you employ anyone you will also need employers' liability. Alongside insurance, a canine first aid certificate is well worth having and reassures clients. These are the non-negotiables that mark you out as a professional rather than a hobbyist.

## Premises and licensing

Where you groom shapes what you need. A high street salon, a converted space at home, or a mobile van each come with different considerations around planning, and if you offer any boarding or day care alongside grooming, licensing rules bite. Straight grooming is generally lighter touch than boarding, but rules and interpretations vary by local authority, so the honest advice is to ring your own council's licensing team and ask directly what they require for your setup. You can also use the government's [licence finder](https://www.gov.uk/licence-finder) to check what might apply. Never assume; a five-minute phone call saves a world of trouble later.

## Your kit

You will already know your tools, but kitting out a business is a bigger outlay than kitting out yourself. At the core you need a sturdy grooming table with a secure arm and loop, a good bath with a decent hose and non-slip surface, a high-velocity dryer, a reliable clipper with a range of blades, quality scissors and thinners, slickers and combs, and a generous stock of shampoos for different coats and skin. Buy the best you can afford on the things your hands live on, the clippers and scissors especially, because cheap tools cost more in the long run and make your work harder.

## Winning your first clients

This is the part that keeps new owners awake, but it is more manageable than it feels. Start with the people who already know your work: former clients if you have permission to contact them, friends, family, local dog walkers and the vet or pet shop down the road. Set up a simple, professional social media presence and post real before-and-after photos of your grooms, because nothing sells a groomer like their finished work. Ask happy clients to leave a review and to tell their dog-owning friends. Word of mouth is still the beating heart of this trade, and a run of beautifully groomed, calm, happy dogs is the best advert you will ever have.

## Frequently asked questions

**Do I need a licence to run a dog grooming business?** Grooming on its own is generally more lightly regulated than boarding or day care, but requirements vary by local authority, so contact your own council's licensing team directly to confirm what applies to your setup. If you add any boarding, home boarding or day care, licensing rules will apply and you must check before you start.

**How do I register a grooming business with HMRC?** Most new groomers register as a sole trader for Self Assessment once they start earning, keep records of income and expenses, and pay Income Tax and National Insurance on their profit. Register early through the official gov.uk guidance, keep tidy books from day one, and set money aside for your tax bill.

**What insurance does a dog groomer need?** At minimum you want public liability plus care, custody and control cover, which protects you if a dog in your care is injured. If you employ anyone, you also need employers' liability. A canine first aid certificate is strongly recommended and reassures clients that you take welfare seriously.

**How much does it cost to start a grooming business?** It varies hugely depending on whether you go mobile, home-based or into a high street salon, but the main outlays are premises, a full professional kit (table, bath, dryer, clippers, scissors, products) and insurance. Write a simple plan of your set-up costs and running costs before committing, and buy the best clippers and scissors you can afford.
