If your dog goes to day care, stays in kennels, mixes at shows or comes to us for a groom, you may have been asked whether they've had their kennel cough vaccination. It's a fair question, and it catches a lot of owners out, because it isn't one of the standard puppy jabs most of us remember booking. The short version: kennel cough is a highly contagious cough that spreads wherever dogs gather, and there's a separate vaccination for it that your vet gives on top of the core boosters.
I'm a groomer, not a vet, so I can't tell you whether your individual dog needs it. What I can do is explain how the vaccine fits into the picture, so the conversation with your vet makes more sense.
## What kennel cough actually is
Kennel cough is the everyday name for a respiratory infection that causes a dry, hacking cough, often described as sounding like something is stuck in the throat. It's usually caused by a mix of a bacterium called Bordetella and a virus, and it spreads easily through the air and on shared surfaces like water bowls.
For most healthy adult dogs it's unpleasant rather than dangerous, and it tends to clear up over a couple of weeks. In puppies, older dogs and those with other health problems it can turn more serious.
## Why it's separate from the core jabs
The core vaccinations your dog has as a puppy, and tops up at their annual booster, cover a different set of diseases. The kennel cough vaccine is what vets call a non-core, or lifestyle, vaccination. That means it isn't automatically given to every dog. Instead it's recommended based on how much your dog mixes with others.
It's usually given as a small squirt up the nose rather than an injection, which surprises a lot of owners. Because it's targeting a different infection, it needs booking as its own thing, and it doesn't last forever.
> **Worth knowing:** Many boarding kennels, day cares and some grooming salons will ask to see proof of a recent kennel cough vaccination before your dog can visit. If you have a holiday or a stay booked, sort it well ahead of time rather than the week before.
## Who's most at risk
Any dog that spends time around other dogs is more exposed. Think about whether your dog:
- Goes to doggy day care or is walked in a group by a dog walker
- Stays in boarding kennels while you're away
- Visits the groomer regularly
- Attends training classes, shows or dog events
- Meets lots of dogs at busy parks or on popular walks

## When to book it
The kennel cough vaccine isn't lifelong, so it needs repeating, usually around once a year, and it takes a little time to become effective after it's given. That's the bit owners most often miss.
If your dog has a kennels stay, a day care spot or a grooming appointment coming up that requires it, don't leave it to the last minute. Ask your vet how long before the visit it needs to be done, and factor that in. ## What we do at the salon if a dog seems poorly
If a dog arrives coughing or seems under the weather, we'll have a quiet word with you rather than press on, because a groom is stressful enough without a chesty cough, and we don't want to pass anything to the next dog. It's never about being awkward, it's about keeping every dog who visits us safe.
## Frequently asked questions
**Is the kennel cough vaccine compulsory?** No, it isn't legally required, unlike some core protections. It's a lifestyle vaccine your vet recommends based on how much your dog mixes with others. Many kennels and day cares do require it as a condition of booking, though.
**How is it given?** Most commonly as a small dose up the nose, though your vet can explain the options for your dog. It's usually quick and dogs tolerate it well.
**How often does my dog need it?** Typically about once a year, but your vet will confirm the timing. It also needs a little while to take effect, so book ahead of any kennels or day care stay.
**My dog only goes to the groomer, do they still need it?** That depends on your dog and your groomer's policy, so it's worth asking both us and your vet. Any setting where dogs come and go carries some risk, so it's a sensible conversation to have.
