# The Lhasa Apso Grooming Guide: Coat Care & What to Expect

A York groomer's guide to the Lhasa Apso coat: the heavy long coat vs the puppy cut, why it mats, daily brushing, and eye and ear care.

The Lhasa Apso is a dog with real history and real character: bred centuries ago as a watchdog and companion in Tibetan monasteries, they are confident, loyal and a little bit independent. What most people notice first, though, is that magnificent long coat that sweeps almost to the ground. It is stunning, and it is a serious grooming commitment.

I always want new Lhasa owners to go in with their eyes open, because this is one of the heaviest, most coat-intensive breeds I look after. The reward is a happy, comfortable dog and, if you want it, a truly beautiful full coat. Here is what that takes, from a groomer here in York.

## Understanding the Lhasa Apso coat

The Lhasa Apso has a long, straight, heavy, dense double coat: a hard-textured topcoat over a softer undercoat. The [Royal Kennel Club's Lhasa Apso profile](https://www.royalkennelclub.com/search/breeds-a-to-z/breeds/utility/lhasa-apso/) lists the coat as long and low-shedding. As with other low-shedding breeds, the loose hair does not fall away, it stays in the coat, and in a coat this dense that means [matting](https://www.fluffsyork.co.uk/dog-grooming-tips-and-tricks/what-causes-matting-in-dogs) can build up fast and deep.

The sheer weight and density of the Lhasa coat is what sets it apart. There is simply a lot of hair, and all of it needs to be brushed right through to the skin.

## How often does a Lhasa Apso need grooming?

For a Lhasa in a trimmed style, I recommend a [professional groom](https://www.fluffsyork.co.uk/dog-grooming-prices-and-packages-in-york) every 4 to 6 weeks. A dog kept in full coat needs regular bathing and upkeep on top of that to stay in condition.

Home [brushing](https://www.fluffsyork.co.uk/dog-grooming-tips-and-tricks/importance-of-brushing-your-dog) is where full-coat owners really commit: a proper daily brush is essential. In a shorter clip, brushing a few times a week is usually enough.

> **Groomer's tip:** With such a dense coat, it is easy to brush the top and think the job is done while a solid mat sits underneath against the skin. Line brush in small sections from the skin outwards, and run a comb through afterwards. If the comb catches, that section needs more work.

## Full coat or puppy cut?

Two realistic paths with a Lhasa Apso:

- **Full coat:** the dramatic floor-length look, often with a topknot to keep hair out of the eyes. It is beautiful, but it is a genuine daily commitment and really suits owners who love grooming.
- **Puppy cut:** a short, even, practical trim all over. Comfortable, low fuss and by far the most popular choice for pet Lhasas. Starting young helps, so ask about [puppy grooming](https://www.fluffsyork.co.uk/puppy-grooming-in-york). It transforms the day-to-day upkeep.

There is no wrong answer, only what fits your life. For most family homes, a shorter clip keeps the dog cooler, cleaner and more comfortable, and it is much kinder if daily brushing is not realistic. Tell your groomer honestly how much time you have and we will choose accordingly.

## Eye and ear care

The long facial hair on a Lhasa can hang into the eyes and irritate them, so it needs to be tied into a topknot or trimmed back. Keep the eye area gently clean with cotton wool and clean water or a vet-approved wipe, and watch for any redness or discharge, as this breed can be prone to eye conditions. If an eye looks sore or cloudy, see your vet.

Lhasas also grow hair in their ear canals and can be prone to ear issues, so ears need regular checking and gentle cleaning, which we handle at every groom, along with keeping nails trimmed and comfortable.

## Matting: prevention beats cure

A heavily matted Lhasa is, sadly, something I see too often, and once a dense coat has felted right down to the skin, the only humane option is usually to clip it short and start again. Matting pulls painfully at the skin and traps moisture and dirt against it. This is never a failure on the owner's part, it is simply how demanding this coat is. The kindest approach is prevention: daily brushing, regular grooms, and choosing a coat length you can genuinely maintain.

## Frequently asked questions

**How often should a Lhasa Apso be groomed?** A professional groom every 4 to 6 weeks, with daily brushing for a full coat or a few times a week for a puppy cut. The dense coat mats quickly if the routine slips.

**Is it cruel to cut a Lhasa Apso's coat short?** Not at all. A puppy cut is a comfortable, practical choice that many Lhasas are happier in, especially in warm weather. A short, clean coat is far kinder than a neglected long one that mats.

**Why does my Lhasa Apso mat so much?** The coat is long, dense and low-shedding, so dead hair stays in it and tangles into the growing coat. The density means mats form deep and fast without daily brushing to the skin.

**Do Lhasa Apsos need professional grooming?** Yes. The heavy double coat, the topknot work, and the eye and ear care really benefit from a professional. Home brushing keeps the coat healthy between visits, but the full groom is a skilled job.
