# Pancreatitis in Dogs: What Every Owner Should Know

A York groomer on pancreatitis in dogs: the fatty-food trigger, signs like sudden vomiting and a hunched posture, prevention through diet, and when to call the vet.

Pancreatitis is one of those conditions that often follows a treat too far. It's [inflammation of the pancreas](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pancreatitis), and it can range from a mild upset to a genuine emergency. The reason it's worth every owner understanding is that one of the biggest triggers, a sudden load of fatty food, is completely within our control. Know the signs and know the trigger, and you're a long way towards protecting your dog.

It tends to spike around Christmas, barbecues and any occasion where scraps and rich leftovers are floating about. So while I'm a groomer rather than a vet, this is exactly the sort of thing I'd want a fellow dog owner to have on their radar before the next family roast.

## What the pancreas does and what goes wrong

The pancreas is a small organ that sits near the stomach and does two big jobs: it produces enzymes that help digest food, and it makes hormones like insulin. With pancreatitis, that organ becomes inflamed, and the digestive enzymes start irritating the pancreas itself. That causes pain, sickness and, in severe cases, a dog who becomes very poorly, very quickly.

It can be acute (sudden and severe) or grumble on more chronically. Either way it's uncomfortable and needs veterinary care.

## The fatty-food trigger

This is the part to really take on board. A sudden hit of rich, fatty food is a well-recognised trigger, which is why cases climb around festive periods. The usual culprits are:

- Sausages, bacon, pork and other fatty meats
- Buttery or oily leftovers, gravy and stuffing
- Cheese and creamy foods
- The turkey skin, roast fat trimmings and the "just a bit off my plate" habit
- Raiding the bin or stealing food off the side

Some dogs are more prone than others, including certain breeds and overweight dogs, but any dog can be affected. The [PDSA](https://www.pdsa.org.uk/pet-help-and-advice/pet-health-hub) and Blue Cross both flag fatty food and table scraps as a leading cause worth guarding against.

> **Worth knowing:** It doesn't take a whole plate to cause trouble. For some dogs a single generous helping of fatty leftovers is enough. The kindest thing you can do at a family meal is decide in advance that the dog gets their own food and nothing off the table.

## Signs of pancreatitis to look for

Signs can come on quite suddenly, often within a day or two of a fatty meal. Watch for:

- **Vomiting**, sometimes repeatedly
- **A hunched, "praying" posture**, with the front end down and the bottom up, which is a sign of tummy pain
- **A painful or tense abdomen**, and reluctance to be touched there
- **Off their food** and generally miserable
- **Diarrhoea**
- **Lethargy, weakness or restlessness**
- **A fever** in some cases

A dog who is repeatedly vomiting, clearly in pain, hunched up or becoming lethargic needs a vet, and severe cases need prompt attention. It's better to ring and be told it's nothing than to leave a genuinely unwell dog.

## Preventing pancreatitis through diet

The best prevention is largely about what your dog doesn't eat:

- **Skip the fatty scraps and leftovers**, especially at Christmas and barbecues. This is the single biggest thing you can do.
- **Keep your dog a healthy weight.** Leaner dogs are at lower risk, and it's better for their joints and general health too.
- **Feed a consistent, good-quality diet** and make any changes gradually rather than overnight.
- **Bin-proof the kitchen.** A determined dog and an open bin is a classic recipe for a poorly tummy.
- **Warn visitors and children** not to slip the dog treats from their plates.

If your dog has had pancreatitis before, your vet may recommend a low-fat diet long term, so follow their guidance closely.

> **Vet note:** Pancreatitis can look like a lot of other tummy problems, and only a vet can diagnose it, usually with an exam and blood tests. Never try to treat suspected pancreatitis at home. Withholding treatment or trying to "wait it out" can let a serious case worsen.

## When to call the vet

Call your vet if your dog is vomiting repeatedly, seems to have tummy pain, adopts that hunched posture, or has gone off food and become lethargic, particularly after a fatty meal or a raided bin. Severe pancreatitis is an emergency, so if your dog is collapsing, very weak or deteriorating fast, contact your vet or an out-of-hours clinic straight away.

## Frequently asked questions

**What triggers pancreatitis in dogs?** The best-known trigger is a sudden helping of fatty food: sausages, bacon, buttery leftovers, gravy and roast trimmings, or a raided bin. Overweight dogs and some breeds are more prone, but any dog can be affected.

**What are the signs of pancreatitis in dogs?** Common signs include vomiting, a hunched "praying" posture from tummy pain, a tender abdomen, going off food, diarrhoea and lethargy. They often appear within a day or two of a fatty meal and warrant a vet visit.

**Can pancreatitis in dogs be prevented?** Largely, yes, by avoiding fatty scraps and leftovers, keeping your dog a healthy weight, feeding a consistent diet, and keeping bins and plates out of reach, especially around Christmas and barbecues.

**Is pancreatitis in dogs an emergency?** It can be. Mild cases still need veterinary care, and severe cases are genuine emergencies. If your dog is repeatedly vomiting, in obvious pain or becoming very weak, contact your vet without delay.

## This isn't veterinary advice

We're professional dog groomers, not vets, so please treat this as friendly general guidance. If you're worried about your dog, or before acting on anything here, speak to your local vet. In an emergency, contact your vet or nearest out-of-hours clinic.
