# Wet vs Dry Dog Food: The Honest Truth About Which to Choose

Wet vs dry dog food, which is better? A York groomer weighs up the pros and cons, whether to mix them, and the truth about the dental myth.

Here is the honest answer nobody selling dog food likes to give: neither wet nor dry is automatically better. As long as it says "complete" on the label, both wet and dry food can give your dog everything they need. The right choice comes down to your dog, your budget and your routine, not a rule you can look up. Wet food wins on hydration and tempting fussy eaters, dry food wins on convenience and cost, and plenty of dogs happily eat a bit of both.

Owners ask me about this all the time while their dog is on the grooming table, usually because they have been told one type is "healthier". Let me lay out the real trade-offs so you can decide with a clear head.

## What actually separates wet from dry

The biggest genuine difference is water. Wet food is roughly three quarters moisture, while dry kibble sits around a tenth. Everything else, the protein, fat and nutrient balance, can be very similar once you account for that water. So a dog on wet food is taking in a lot more fluid at mealtimes, and a dog on dry food needs to drink more from the bowl.

Beyond that, it comes down to practicalities.

## The case for dry food

Dry food is the default for a lot of households, and for good reasons:

- **Convenient and long lasting.** It stores easily, does not spoil quickly once opened, and can be left down a little longer.
- **Usually cheaper** per meal, especially for larger dogs.
- **Easy to weigh and portion**, which helps with [keeping weight in check and avoiding obesity](https://www.pdsa.org.uk/pet-help-and-advice/pet-health-hub/conditions/obesity-in-dogs).
- **Handy for training**, since small pieces make good rewards.

The main downside is that it is less exciting to a picky dog, and it does nothing extra for hydration.

## The case for wet food

Wet food has real strengths, particularly for certain dogs:

- **Extra hydration**, which helps dogs who do not drink much, or those with certain urinary or kidney conditions where fluid intake matters.
- **More aromatic and tempting**, which can coax an older, unwell or fussy dog to eat.
- **Easier to chew** for dogs with dental problems or missing teeth.

The trade-offs are cost, shorter shelf life once opened, and the fact that it clings to teeth more than a crunchy biscuit does.

## Can you mix wet and dry?

Yes, and lots of people do. Mixing gives you variety, a bit of extra moisture, and a happy middle ground on cost. A common approach is dry food as the base with a spoonful of wet stirred through to make it more appealing. The one thing to watch is the total: it is easy to overfeed when you combine two foods, so count both toward the daily allowance rather than serving a full portion of each. If your dog has a sensitive tummy, introduce any change slowly.

> **\> Worth knowing:** Whichever you choose, the word that matters most on the packaging is "complete". A complete food is designed to provide all the nutrients your dog needs on its own. A "complementary" food is not, and is meant to be fed alongside something else. The PDSA's [guide to your dog's diet](https://www.pdsa.org.uk/pet-help-and-advice/looking-after-your-pet/puppies-dogs/your-dogs-diet) is a clear place to check the basics.

## The dental myth, cleared up

You will often hear that dry food cleans a dog's teeth. It is a tempting idea, but it is largely a myth. Most kibble shatters on the first bite and never really scrubs the tooth surface, and it certainly does not reach the gumline where problems start. Some special dental diets with larger, textured pieces are designed to do a bit of gentle cleaning, but ordinary biscuits are not a substitute for proper dental care. Nothing in the bowl replaces regular tooth brushing and vet dental checks. If dental health is your reason for choosing dry, it is worth knowing that on its own it will not keep your dog's mouth healthy. The RSPCA and your vet can point you to sensible dental care routines.

## So which should you pick?

For most healthy dogs, either works well, so let your circumstances lead. Choose dry for convenience and value, wet if your dog needs tempting or extra fluids, or a mix if you want a bit of both. What matters far more than the format is feeding a complete food in the right amount and keeping your dog a healthy shape.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is wet or dry food better for dogs?** Neither is universally better. Both can be complete and balanced. The best choice depends on your dog's needs, your routine and your budget, not on one being healthier by nature.

**Does dry food really clean my dog's teeth?** Not meaningfully. Ordinary kibble breaks apart too quickly to scrub teeth or reach the gumline. Only certain dental diets do a little, and none replace brushing and vet check-ups.

**Is it okay to mix wet and dry food?** Yes. Mixing is popular and perfectly fine. Just make sure the combined amount matches your dog's daily allowance so you do not accidentally overfeed, and change things gradually.

**Which is better value?** Dry food is usually cheaper per meal and stores longer, which is why it suits many multi-dog or larger-dog households. Wet food costs more but can be worth it for fussy or poorly dogs.
