So why does your dog stare at you? Most of the time it's a good thing: a soft, relaxed stare is usually your dog showing affection, reading your cues or hoping for something (often dinner). There's one exception worth knowing about, which is a hard, fixed stare that can be a warning, and I'll cover that too. Let's go through what's really going on behind those eyes. I get plenty of intense looks at the salon here in York, usually from a dog checking that everything's okay, and reading a dog's expression is a big part of handling them gently. ## Affection and bonding A soft, gentle stare is often pure love. When dogs and their owners look at each other calmly, it releases a bonding hormone (oxytocin, the same one involved in the bond between parents and babies) in both of you.
