# Winter Paw & Coat Care: Protecting Your Dog From Grit, Salt & Yorkshire Mud

Keep your dog's paws and coat healthy through a Yorkshire winter: protecting against grit and rock salt, preventing ice balls, and drying off properly after wet walks.

Winter walks in and around York have a certain charm: frosty mornings along the Ouse, crisp loops of Strensall Common, the dog coming home steaming and delighted. But the cold season brings a few hazards for paws and coats that are easy to miss, and a little aftercare goes a long way. Here's how to keep your dog comfortable, healthy and mud-free through the colder months.

## The hidden danger: grit and rock salt

When the [gritters are out](https://www.pdsa.org.uk/what-we-do/blog/pet-care-advice-for-winter) across York's roads and pavements, that rock salt does a great job for us, but it's a problem for dogs. Salt and chemical de-icers can cause **soreness, irritation and even chemical burns** on paw pads, and if your dog licks it off their feet (as most do), the [salt is **toxic if swallowed**](https://www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/seasonal/winter/pets/dogs) in any quantity, causing anything from an upset tummy to, in serious cases, more dangerous salt poisoning.

The same goes for **[antifreeze](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethylene_glycol_poisoning)**, which dogs find sweet and tempting but which is potentially fatal even in small amounts, so wipe paws and tummies after walks and clean up any spills at home immediately.

**The simple fix:** after every winter walk, rinse your dog's paws (and tummy and legs on low-slung or longer-coated dogs) in lukewarm water to remove salt and grit, then dry them thoroughly. Check between the toes for any stuck grit or little cuts while you're at it. If your dog is suddenly licking or chewing their paws after walks, that's often a sign of salt irritation worth checking.

## Preventing painful ice balls

On long-haired and feathered breeds (Spaniels, Goldens, Doodles and the like) snow and ice clump into hard little balls in the fur between the toes and pads. They're uncomfortable, make walking awkward, and can cause your dog to slip.

The best prevention is keeping the **fur between the paw pads neatly trimmed** so there's less for ice to cling to. This is a quick, routine part of any groom, and one of the most useful things you can have done before deep winter sets in, often alongside a [nail clip](https://www.fluffsyork.co.uk/dog-nail-clipping-cost-in-york) to keep feet comfortable on hard, frosty ground. A dog-safe paw balm can also help protect pads that are prone to drying and cracking in the cold (use a balm made for dogs, never a human cream). Some dogs tolerate boots, which shield paws from both salt and ice, though they're not for every dog, and they take some getting used to.

## Drying off properly after wet walks

This is the one I bang on about most, because it matters so much. A damp coat in winter doesn't just leave your dog cold. Trapped moisture against the skin leads to **matting, skin irritation and infections**, and mats are far more than cosmetic: they pull on the skin and trap damp right against it.

After a wet or muddy walk:

1. **Towel-dry thoroughly**, or use a dog-safe dryer, paying attention to the legs, belly, armpits and between the toes where damp lingers.
2. **Don't let your dog go to bed damp.** Make sure they're properly dry first.
3. **Brush once dry** to lift out any drying mud and prevent tangles forming.

A canine drying coat is a brilliant winter investment for soggy days, and keeping up a [regular brushing routine](https://www.fluffsyork.co.uk/dog-grooming-tips-and-tricks/importance-of-brushing-your-dog) through winter stops the damp-and-mud cycle turning into a matted mess.

## Coat care: resist the urge to over-trim

In winter, your dog's coat is working hard to keep them warm. For most breeds, this isn't the season for a short cut: leaving a little more length (breed-depending) gives them helpful coverage against the cold. **Elderly dogs, puppies, thin-coated and small breeds** feel the cold most and may appreciate a well-fitted coat for walks, especially once temperatures drop below around 7°C.

What winter coats *do* need is regular maintenance to stay healthy and mat-free: brushing at home between grooms, and [professional grooming](https://www.fluffsyork.co.uk/dog-grooming-prices-and-packages-in-york) to keep the coat clean, balanced and in good condition, with that all-important trim of the paw and sanitary fur. A well-kept winter coat insulates far better than a neglected, matted one, which actually loses its ability to keep your dog warm.

## A quick winter checklist

- Rinse and dry paws after every gritted-pavement walk
- Wipe down tummies and legs to remove salt and grit
- Keep paw-pad fur trimmed to prevent ice balls
- Dry your dog fully after wet walks. Never let them sleep damp
- Brush regularly to prevent mud-matting
- Consider a coat for cold-sensitive dogs, and reflective gear for dark walks
- Keep antifreeze well away and clean up spills immediately

## Frequently asked questions

**Is rock salt bad for dogs?** Yes. Grit and rock salt can irritate or burn paw pads and are toxic if licked off and swallowed. Rinse your dog's paws in lukewarm water after walks on gritted pavements and dry them thoroughly.

**How do I stop ice balls forming in my dog's paws?** Keep the fur between the paw pads trimmed short so ice has less to cling to. A dog-safe paw balm or boots can also help on snowy, icy walks.

**Should I dry my dog after every winter walk?** Yes. A damp coat in winter can cause matting, skin irritation and infections, as well as leaving your dog cold. Towel or blow-dry thoroughly, especially the legs, belly and between the toes, before they settle down.

**Should I cut my dog's coat short in winter?** Generally no. A fuller coat helps keep your dog warm. Focus on regular maintenance to keep it clean and mat-free, plus trimming the paw and sanitary fur. Cold-sensitive dogs may also benefit from a coat for walks.
