The single most useful thing to know is this: go slower than you think you need to. A new dog or puppy is overwhelmed, so a calm, predictable, low-key first week does far more good than a whirlwind of visitors and outings. Give them space, gentle routine and time, and they will settle. Here is how to make that happen. Whether you have collected a bouncy eight-week-old puppy or an older rescue finding their feet, the principles are much the same, just paced differently. ## Before they arrive: prepare the space A little prep saves a lot of stress. Before your dog comes home, set up: - **A quiet den or safe space,** a bed or crate tucked away from the busiest part of the house, where they can retreat and not be disturbed - **Food and water** in a separate spot from where they sleep - **Puppy-proofing:** trailing cables, houseplants, shoes and anything chewable out of reach - **The basics:** collar and ID tag (a legal requirement in public), lead, bowls and a couple of simple toys Decide the house rules as a household in advance. Is the sofa allowed? Which rooms are off-limits? Consistency from day one is far kinder than changing your mind later. ## The first day: keep it quiet Resist the urge to throw a welcome party. Bring your dog in calmly, show them their space, their water and the garden for toilet breaks, and then let them explore at their own pace. Sit quietly and let them come to you rather than swooping in for cuddles. Expect a wobbly first night.
