Shih Tzu grooming in York, with a gentle touch

Hello, I'm Lucy, and I'd love to look after your Shih Tzu. These little dogs carry a long, dense coat that keeps growing throughout their lives rather than moulting, which is part of their charm but also why they mat so readily. Without regular brushing right down to the skin, that soft hair quickly knots behind the ears, under the legs and around the tummy, so staying on top of it really matters.

Because the coat grows continuously, most Shih Tzus do best with a full groom every four to six weeks, whether you love the flowing coat with a neat topknot or prefer a practical puppy or teddy cut that is far easier to keep at home. A groom with me starts with a warm bath, then drying the coat straight so I can work through it properly, followed by careful clipping and scissoring into the finish you want. Shih Tzus are clipped and scissored, never hand stripped.

The groomer behind Fluffs

I'm Lucy, and dogs have been my whole world for as long as I can remember. I hold a City and Guilds Level 2 and 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming and I am hand-stripping trained, but it is the dogs themselves I love most, especially a sweet, soulful Shih Tzu face looking up at me. You can read more about me over on the About page.

I pay real attention to the face, gently cleaning around those big eyes where tear staining gathers, keeping the hair tidy so it does not irritate, and checking and cleaning the ears too. I finish with nails trimmed to a comfortable length. As a flat-faced breed they can find handling a little more tiring, so I keep everything slow, calm and kind throughout.

Every appointment is one to one and completely crate free, so your Shih Tzu is never left waiting in a cage and has my full attention from start to finish. I hold a Level 2 and 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming, and I take as much time as your dog needs, from a wriggly first visit to my long-standing regulars across York.

FAQs

Common Questions

When can my Shih Tzu puppy have their first groom?

Bring your Shih Tzu puppy in as soon as they've had their second set of vaccinations, usually around 12 to 14 weeks. My Puppy Introduction is a gentle, positive first visit, getting them happy with the bath, brush, dryer and clippers before any big styling. Starting early matters for this breed, because that coat needs regular grooming for life, so I want them to feel relaxed and safe with me right from the start.

How often does a Shih Tzu need grooming?

Because a Shih Tzu's coat grows continuously and doesn't moult, I'd recommend a full groom every four to six weeks. Leaving it longer lets the soft hair tighten into mats close to the skin, which is uncomfortable and harder to put right. A little brushing at home between visits, especially around the ears, legs and tummy, keeps the coat open and makes each appointment a much happier one for your dog.

Is a Shih Tzu's coat clipped or hand stripped?

Shih Tzus are clipped and scissored, never hand stripped, so there's no plucking involved. Their long, dense coat is maintained with clipping and scissoring into whatever suits you, from a flowing coat with a topknot to an easy-care puppy or teddy cut. I also give real care to the face and eyes, gently tidying the hair and cleaning where tear staining builds up, along with checking and cleaning the ears.

What's your cancellation policy?

I ask for at least 24 hours' notice if you need to rearrange, as it means I can offer your slot to another dog on the waiting list. Just drop me a message if your plans change and I'll always do my best to find you another time that works. Late cancellations or no shows may be subject to a fee.
