Not every dog can be let off the lead in a busy park, and that's absolutely nothing to feel guilty about. I groom plenty of dogs who'd find Clifton Ings on a Saturday morning completely overwhelming — nervous rescues, sighthounds with a strong prey drive, bouncy puppies still learning recall, and reactive dogs who simply do better with their own space.
That's exactly what secure dog fields are for. These are private, fully enclosed paddocks you hire by the hour (usually for just you and your own dogs), so your pup can finally run, sniff and play with zero risk of bolting or bumping into another dog. As a groomer who works one-to-one precisely because some dogs need calm and space, I'm a big fan. Here are the best enclosed dog fields near York.
York Dog Park, Knapton
The closest option to the city — just three miles from York centre, off the A1237 outer ring road in the village of Knapton. It's been voted North Yorkshire's Dog Field of the Year two years running, and it's easy to see why.
- Size & security: Two separate one-acre fields with 6ft deer fencing and rabbit netting dug in underground. A mesh screen between the two fields means neighbouring dogs can't see each other — great for reactive dogs.
- Facilities: Full agility course, shelter, seating, gazebo, and a paddling pool in summer.
- Booking: Private one-hour sessions, plus group classes and socialising sessions. Open 7 days a week.
Best for: Local owners who want somewhere quick and easy with great facilities.
Corners K9 Fields, Easingwold
A short drive north of York at North Moor Road, Easingwold (YO61 3QE), Corners has four secure fields of around two acres each, all with 6ft fencing and ground-level wire to stop diggers. The clever bit is that each field has a different purpose:
- A purpose-built enrichment field with weave poles, tunnels and tyres
- A plain long stretch ideal for recall practice and flat-out running
- A natural enrichment field good for working dogs
- Plus a fourth field
There's secure drive-in parking behind gates, so your dog is safe from the moment you open the car door. Prices start from around £6 for 30 minutes.
Best for: Owners who like variety, and serious recall or training practice.
Forpets Field, near Howden
Out towards Selby and Howden on the A63 (Hemingbrough, YO8 6EL), this enclosed field is handily located next to the Spuds & Berries farm shop and restaurant — so you can grab a bite after. On-site parking, online booking, open from 8am daily.
Best for: Owners on the south/east side of York heading towards the M62.
Paw Park, Sand Hutton
A secure paw park near Stamford Bridge, on Sand Hutton's edge — a convenient choice if you're east of the city. Booking is via their Facebook page.
Best for: Owners around Stamford Bridge and the eastern villages.
Worth the extra miles: Sammy's Field, Melsonby
A little further out towards Richmond, but worth a mention for anyone who fancies a day trip. Sammy's Field is a four-acre field with 6ft fencing dug underground, created in memory of a rescue collie who struggled around other dogs. It has a purpose-built dog pool, a ball pit, agility equipment, a fresh water station and even a cabin serving hot drinks. Prices start at around £11 for up to two dogs.
Best for: A proper canine adventure day, water-loving dogs, and owners of reactive or escape-artist dogs.
How to choose the right field for your dog
A few things I'd suggest thinking about:
- Fence height. If you've got a springy Spaniel or a determined Lab, look for 6ft fencing. For most dogs, lower can be fine — match it to your dog's athleticism.
- Underground wire. Essential if your dog is a digger.
- Surface and shelter. Useful in our Yorkshire weather, especially for older dogs.
- First visits. Many fields check vaccinations by email before your first session and send a video showing the gate system. Allow the changeover buffer (usually 10 minutes) so you never cross paths with another dog.
A note for nervous and reactive dogs
If your dog finds the world a bit much, you already know how much calmer life is when they have space and predictability. The same thinking applies to grooming. I work one-to-one at Fluffs precisely so that anxious, reactive and elderly dogs aren't surrounded by other dogs, noise and crates. If your pup needs the secure-field approach to walks, they'll likely appreciate the same gentle, unhurried approach to their groom.
