Golden Retriever grooming in York, built around that double coat

Goldens are such a joy to have in the salon, and getting their grooming right really comes down to understanding the double coat. Underneath that glorious water repellent topcoat sits a soft, insulating undercoat, and the two work together to protect your dog against both heat and cold. Keeping that coat healthy needs the right approach rather than simply tidying the surface.

The heart of a Golden groom is deshedding, not shaving. Every visit I bath your dog and give a thorough blow dry to lift the undercoat, then work through it with the right tools to remove the dead, loose hair before it packs down and causes problems. I pay particular care to the feathering on the legs, chest, tail and behind the ears, where knots love to hide, before finishing the nails and gently checking and cleaning the ears. I keep the natural shape with a light tidy and never shave a Golden down, because shaving spoils how the coat regrows and strips away that natural weatherproofing.

Meet your groomer

I am Lucy, and I hold my City and Guilds Level 2 and 3 Diplomas in Dog Grooming. Big, gentle Goldens are a joy to work with, and my love for dogs is at the heart of everything I do. There is more about my qualifications and story on my About page.

Goldens tend to moult heavily twice a year, usually in spring and autumn, so a regular deshedding routine keeps the loose hair off your sofa and your dog far more comfortable through those seasonal changes.

Whether you are just off Bishopthorpe Road or coming in from further across York, your Golden gets the same calm, unhurried welcome every time. It is one to one, just me and your dog, with no crates and no busy waiting room. I hold a Level 2 and 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming, and I take the time to do the coat properly, because that patience is exactly what a big double coat asks for.

FAQs

Common Questions

When can my Golden Retriever puppy start grooming?

With a Golden pup I love to start as soon as they have had their second set of vaccinations, usually around 12 to 14 weeks. They grow so fast that early handling really pays off. My Puppy Introduction is short, gentle and full of fuss, getting them happy with the bath, the dryer and having their paws and feathering touched, so that by the time the big double coat comes in they already think the salon is a lovely place to be.

How often should a Golden Retriever be groomed?

Goldens do best on a regular routine rather than the odd visit. I generally suggest a full groom every six to eight weeks, moving to more frequent deshedding sessions during the heavy spring and autumn moults. Staying on top of the shedding this way keeps the coat healthy, keeps your dog comfortable and keeps the loose hair off your furniture.

Should you shave a Golden Retriever in summer?

Please never shave a Golden, even in warm weather. Their double coat is best looked after with regular deshedding, where I gently remove the dead, loose undercoat so the topcoat can do its job. That coat actually insulates against heat as well as cold, so shaving it can leave your dog less protected, and it can damage how the coat grows back. A healthy deshed and light tidy is always the better choice.

What is your cancellation policy?

I ask for at least 24 hours' notice if you need to reschedule, as it lets me offer the slot to another dog on my waiting list. Goldens really do need regular sessions to stay on top of that shedding, so I am always happy to help you find a new time. Late cancellations or no shows may be subject to a fee.
