Labrador grooming in York, done properly
Hello, I'm Lucy, and I'm so pleased you're looking into grooming for your Labrador. Labs are one of the most popular breeds around York, and they're an absolute joy to have in the salon, but that short coat asks for more care than most people expect. Under the sleek, weatherproof topcoat sits a soft, dense undercoat built for water and cold, and that double layer is exactly why Labradors are such heavy shedders. They moult steadily all year round and then drop their undercoat in big flushes come spring and autumn.
Because of that, the heart of a Labrador groom is a good bath followed by proper deshedding. I work through the coat with the right tools to lift out all the loose, dead undercoat, which is what causes so much of the hair you find on your carpets and clothes. There's very little clipping or scissoring needed on a Lab, so alongside the bath and a thorough blow-dry it's really about a clean, healthy coat, neatly trimmed nails and clean, comfortable ears.
The person behind Fluffs
I am Lucy, City and Guilds Level 2 and 3 qualified in dog grooming. Labs are such happy, easy going companions and I adore them. The qualifications matter to me, but the love of dogs matters more, and I hope it shows in how every visit goes. My About page has the rest.

Every appointment with me is one to one and completely crate free, so your Lab has my full attention from start to finish and never sits waiting in a cage. I hold a Level 2 and 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming, and I keep things calm and unhurried, because a relaxed dog is a happy dog. Labradors tend to be bouncy, sociable souls, and I love that energy, so I give them the time and steady handling they need to enjoy the whole experience.
- Bath and thorough blow-dry to open the coat
- Full deshedding to lift out the loose undercoat
- Nails tidied and ears gently cleaned
Wherever you're travelling from across York, your Lab gets the same warm welcome every single visit.
Common Questions
When can my Labrador puppy have their first groom?
I'd love to see your Labrador pup as soon as they've had their second set of vaccinations, usually around 12 to 14 weeks. Labs are enthusiastic, wriggly puppies, so getting them used to the salon early makes all the difference. My Puppy Introduction is short and full of fuss, letting them enjoy the bath and the dryer and learn to stand nicely, so that as they grow into their heavy shedding coat, grooming feels like a normal, happy part of life.
How often does a Labrador need a deshedding session?
For a Labrador I'd suggest a deshedding session every four to six weeks, with a little extra during the spring and autumn moults when the undercoat comes out in force. Keeping to a regular cycle stops the loose hair building up, keeps the coat and skin healthy, and means far less fur ends up around your home. Between visits, a quick brush at home helps enormously too.
Should a Labrador's coat ever be shaved or clipped short?
No, I'd never shave a Labrador. That double coat insulates them against both heat and cold and protects the skin, so it's meant to stay as it is. Labs also aren't a hand stripped breed, so there's no plucking involved. Instead I care for the coat with regular deshedding, gently removing the dead undercoat that causes all the moulting, which leaves your dog more comfortable and your house a good deal cleaner.
What's your cancellation policy?
I ask for at least 24 hours' notice if you need to rearrange, as it lets me offer your slot to another dog on my waiting list. Labs really benefit from regular deshedding to stay on top of all that moulting, so I'm always happy to help you find a new time. Late cancellations or no shows may be subject to a fee.
