Spaniels are one of my favourite coats to work on, and York has plenty of them, from busy pet Cockers to working lines coming in muddy from the fields. Whichever you have, the silky feathering is what defines the groom. That long hair on the ears, legs, chest and tummy mats quickly, especially after walks along the river, so it needs proper, regular attention to stay soft and knot free.
Those low hanging, warm covered ears deserve special mention too, as their shape makes them prone to trouble if left, so I check and gently clean them every visit. A typical groom with me starts with a bath and thorough dry, then careful brushing and working out of the feathering, shaping the coat, and finishing the nails, with everything done at a relaxed pace.
When it comes to the coat itself, it really depends on your dog and your lifestyle. A clip is lovely for pet spaniels and keeps the feathering easy to manage day to day. If your dog carries the correct wiry textured working or show coat, hand stripping can be the better choice, as it preserves the natural texture and rich colour. Common Questions
When should my spaniel puppy have its first groom?
I recommend bringing your spaniel pup in as soon as they have had their second set of vaccinations, usually around 12 to 14 weeks. Spaniels grow that feathering surprisingly quickly, so early handling really helps. My Puppy Introduction is short and full of cuddles, getting them used to having their ears, feet and legs gently handled, so brushing out those feathers later feels completely normal.
How often should a Cocker Spaniel be groomed?
Most spaniels do best with a full groom every six to eight weeks to keep that feathering on the ears, legs and tummy from matting. Working dogs coming in muddy may benefit from a slightly closer routine, while a little brushing at home between visits helps too. Staying on a regular cycle is by far the kindest way to keep the coat comfortable.
Should my spaniel be clipped or hand stripped?
It really comes down to the coat and how you want it kept. A clip is lovely for pet spaniels and keeps the feathering easy to manage day to day. If your dog has the correct wiry textured working or show coat, hand stripping can be the better choice, as it preserves the natural texture and rich colour, and it is completely painless when the coat is ready to release. I will look at your dog's coat and talk you through what suits them.
What is your cancellation policy?
I ask for at least 24 hours' notice if you need to reschedule, so I can offer the slot to another dog on my waiting list. Spaniels really benefit from staying on a regular routine to keep that feathering knot free, so I am always glad to help you rebook. Late cancellations or no shows may be subject to a fee.
