Hand Stripping

From £65

Preserve your dog’s natural coat health with our expert hand-stripping service. A gentle, meticulous technique that keeps wire and silky coats looking sharp, hardy, and perfectly textured.

What is Hand Stripping?

Unlike clipping—which uses electric blades to cut across the hair shaft—hand stripping involves manually removing the dead outer guard hairs from the root.

Because wire-haired breeds don’t shed in the traditional sense, these dead hairs can sit in the follicle, blocking new growth. By "stripping" the coat by hand, we make room for a fresh, vibrant, and wire-textured coat to grow through.

Why Choose Stripping Over Clipping?

Many "assembly-line" salons skip hand stripping because it is time-consuming, but for the health of your dog’s coat, the difference is night and day:

Maintains Colour: Clipping often "fades" a dog's coat, making it look dull or silver. Stripping keeps the rich, natural pigment.

Protects Texture: Clipping turns a wire coat soft and "fluffy," losing its weather-resistant properties. Stripping keeps the coat crisp and harsh, exactly as the breed standard intended.

Skin Health: Removing dead hair prevents clogged follicles and skin irritation, especially important for active dogs exploring the muddy trails around Strensall Common or Wigginton Moor.

The Fluffs Process

With Level 3 Qualification in advanced styling, the hand-stripping process at Fluffs is handled with a "canine-first" mentality.

The Consultation: We assess your dog’s coat cycle (the "blown" stage) to ensure the hair is ready to be released comfortably.

The Technique: Using specialised stones or finger-pulling, we gently remove the dead hair in the direction of growth.

The One-on-One Experience: Because hand stripping takes longer than a standard groom, we ensure your dog is never rushed. There are no noisy crates and no other dogs — just a peaceful environment with plenty of breaks.

The Finish: We tidy the "furniture" (the legs and face) to ensure your pup leaves looking sharp, tidy, and ready for their next village walk.

Is your dog a candidate?

Hand stripping is ideal for Border Terriers, Jack Russells, Schnauzers, Wire-Haired Pointers, and many more. If you aren't sure if your dog's coat is suitable, we offer free coat assessments for our Haxby and Wigginton neighbours.

FAQs

Common Questions

What is hand stripping?

Hand stripping gently removes the dead, loose topcoat by hand rather than clipping it off. This keeps the harsh, weather-resistant texture and the rich colour that wire-coated breeds are known for.

Does hand stripping hurt my dog?

Not at all when it is done at the right time. When the coat is "blown" and ready to come out, it lifts away painlessly. It is a natural process and most dogs settle happily into it.

Which breeds need hand stripping?

It suits wire-coated breeds such as Border Terriers, Miniature Schnauzers, Cairn Terriers and many working spaniels. Clipping these coats is quicker but softens the texture and fades the colour over time.

How long does hand stripping take and how often?

It is a labour of love and takes longer than a clip, often a couple of hours, so it is priced accordingly (from around 65 pounds). Most wire coats are stripped every 8 to 12 weeks or a few times a year.
